Calm Waters News and Updates
Calm Waters in Yukon | Winter Grief Workshop
Calm Waters will host a FREE Winter Grief Workshop, sponsored by Yanda & Son Funeral Home , on Saturday, November 9 from 2 to 4 p.m ., at the Yukon First United Methodist Church, 400 Elm Avenue, Yukon, OK 73099. While participation is free, registration is required

The workshop is a free event to help children, adults, and families prepare for the holiday season and cope with the death of a loved one or a recent family separation due to divorce, deployment, deportation, incarceration or foster/adoptive care.

"For many children, this is their first Thanksgiving with Mom and Dad in separate houses and for other families, this is the first Christmas since Grandma died and it’s difficult to organize expected family events,” said Heather Warfield, LMFT, Calm Waters’ Program Director. “Our Grief Workshop allows hurting families to learn new ways to manage loss during a time of year that holds high expectations for joy and togetherness.”

Calm Waters’ on-staff therapists will lead a holiday-focused curriculum to help the entire family navigate loss and change through concurrent adult and children’s activities and micro-support groups with each experience providing tools to cope with loss during a time of year that is usually filled with joy. The end-goal for attendees is to learn how to grieve together while honoring holiday traditions and memories.

Registration Deadline: Thursday, Nov. 7
Five Local Foundations and Businesses Donate
$28,350 to Calm Waters
On October 3, Calm Waters announced that five Oklahoma-based foundations and businesses donated a total of $28,350.

The Oklahoma City Dodgers Baseball and Oklahoma Fidelity Bank each donated $50 for every Dodgers home run this past season to the Home Run Donation program, and gave a combined gift of $4,850 to Calm Waters.

In addition, the E.L. and Thelma Gaylord Foundation has awarded a $20,000 grant, the Kerr Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant and the Phillip Boyle Foundation has awarded a $2,500 grant. All of the recent donations will fund grief support for children and families in their grief journeys caused by death or divorce.
Update on the Wait List
Last month, we announced that due to increased demand for Calm Waters Divorce Support services, we had to create a first-ever wait list . The Center was in desperate need of at least five new volunteer group facilitators.

Since this news was shared, our organization has experienced two outcomes:

1 - SIXTEEN new volunteers responded to our need and are in the middle of Calm Waters Grief theory training.

2 - 21 more families have registered for our Thursday night Divorce support group !

In summary, we are so grateful for the community response in both volunteerism and the need for services! Calm Waters is still accepting volunteer group facilitators.

Calm Waters Intern and Volunteer Spotlight
Honor McFarland-Smith

Honor is pursuing her Masters of Science in Family and Child Studies - Infant and Child Specialist at UCO and will graduate this May!

In addition to pursuing Masters studies, teaching in the Sunbeam early child development center, and being a mom to the cutest 2-yr-old, she ALSO facilitates Calm Waters grief and divorce support groups two evenings a week at our Center.

Honor has worked with young children since she was a teen, and has dedicated the last decade of her career to children and families. She says that the Calm Waters internship provides a unique perspective on how children and their parents experience and cope with grief and family separation, and plans to use her experience and Calm Waters’ resources to help more children and their families in the future.
Mary Siems

When Mary was six, her dad died in a car accident, and she didn't have the tools or support to help her process her grief. Her family was broken, and this loss became such a big part of her identity.

The Calm Waters' mission to help children and families in their grief journey resonated with Mary because it's what she desperately wished she’d had as a child.

In addition to Mary’s Calm Waters role as a volunteer group facilitator every other Monday night, this Southern Nazarene University graduate is a freelance systems consultant.

“I have always been drawn to working with kids, and because I have experienced a parent death in my life, Calm Waters felt like the right fit."
