December 12 to December 18, 2020

Caltrain is committed to the health and safety of our passengers and staff. To that end, we've adapted our service to operate under continually changing conditions in light of COVID-19. For more information, visit our COVID-19 Updates page.

Notice: Starting December 14, Caltrain will be providing two trains per hour on weekdays and one train per hour on weekends in order to allow for social distancing onboard.  In addition to the new service changes, Caltrain's agreement with the Town of Atherton will result in Atherton Station being permanently closed as of Saturday, December 19.

Weekday Work

During the day on Monday, December 14 to Friday, December 18 construction crews may be shoring near the west plaza area and the East Tunnel near Poletti Way.  Shoring work consists of metal sheets being installed in the ground to create a retaining wall. Construction crews may be working extended hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. One lane of Poletti will be closed and traffic control will be along the road during construction.

Neighbors may hear additional noises from heavy machinery and equipment backup alarms. We apologize for any inconvenience these activities may occur.

Hillsdale Station Closure

This past spring, the Caltrain Hillsdale Station temporarily closed to allow for construction of the new track alignment, the lowering of 28th Avenue, and the building of the new station. Due to COVID-19 and the pandemic's impact on the project supply chain, the new station is now anticipated to open winter/spring 2021, dependent on labor and materials. To learn more, please visit www.Caltrain.com/HillsdaleTempClosure.

Background
Caltrain, in cooperation with the City of San Mateo, will raise the tracks and slightly lower the road (grade separate) at E. 25th Avenue in San Mateo. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce local traffic congestion in San Mateo. In addition, the project will create new east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues; and as part of the project improvements, Caltrain will build a new elevated Hillsdale Station with updated amenities between E. 28th and E. 31st Avenues.

In order to maintain regular train service, some activities will be conducted during nights and weekends, outside of normal train service hours. Neighbors may experience construction noise and light during these times. Please note the Hillsdale Station temporarily closed in spring 2020, for the building of the new elevated Hillsdale Station. To learn more, please visit www.Caltrain.com/HillsdaleTempClosure. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The overall project construction is expected to be complete in fall 2021.

pcepCaltrain Electrification

Caltrain Electrification is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization program which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor from San Francisco's 4th and King Caltrain Station to approximately the Tamien Caltrain Station.

The primary purpose of Caltrain Electrification is to improve Caltrain system performance, reduce long-term environmental impact by reducing noise, improving regional air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An electrified Caltrain system would better address Peninsula commuters' vision of increased service and improved travel times in an environmentally friendly and reliable way. This also is expected to help accommodate increase system ridership through improved system operations.
