SM
25th Avenue Grade Separation Project

Night/Weekend Work

At night on Monday, November 18 to Friday, November 22, installation of the retaining wall panels may occur between the pedestrian underpass to 25th Avenue.

Weekday Work
Monday, November 18 to Friday, November 22:
  • Pedestrian Underpass north: Crews will  work on retaining walls, excavate, backfill, and install panels. They will also form/strip and rebar foundations.
  • Pedestrian Underpass: Crews will work on the wall footing, doing form work and installing rebar.
  • 28th Avenue: Crews will work on the abutment, girder, ramp, and retaining wall placing rebar, and closing forms.
  • 31st Avenue: Crews recently installed a steel bridge at 31st Avenue (see timelapse video). They will continue to work on the bridge, installing the walkway and grating.
  • Leslie Street: Parking on the east side of Leslie Street, starting south of Trinta Park for approximately 185 feet, will be restricted. Please note, paving work in this area originally scheduled to begin on Monday, November 18 will now begin on November 21.
  • 10th to 14th Avenues: Soil was originally distributed in this location in preparation for a future parking track as a previous one was removed due to the grade separation project. No parking track installation will occur, as a construction contract has not been issued. A community meeting was held on this future project on October 8, 2019. For more information, visit www.Caltrain.com/SMParkingTrack
    • Grading and installation of a drainage ditch is occurring in this location to prevent runoff and pooling from the rain. This work is now anticipated to continue through next week. During this time, no parking track installation work will occur. For information about this work, click here
    • In past communications, it was mentioned that grading and installation of a drainage ditch would occur on the Caltrain right-of-way between 9th and 14th Avenues to prevent runoff and pooling from the rain. Crews will begin this work starting on Tuesday, November 5, and anticipate completing the work by the following week. During this time, crews will meet on site starting at 7:00 a.m., with actual construction work from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During this time, no parking track installation work will occur as a public process is still ongoing and a construction contract has not been issued.

    • Please note that Caltrain Electrification crews will temporarily be utilizing the area between 9th and 14th Avenues as a pole laydown area. Crews will utilize the area to load poles on to an on-rail construction flat car via crane and then install those poles on completed foundations along the right-of-way north or south of the temporary laydown area. After staging the area is no loner needed for pole laydown, the Electrification contractor will vacate the area and return it to its original condition. No work will be completed for the proposed future parking track during this time.
    • Work hours at the temporary pole laydown area will be primarily during evening hours on weekends. The temporary pole laydown area is expected to be utilized four additional weekends in 2019 and two weekends in 2020. During this time, there may be some noise from backup alarms and limited light as cranes and equipment turn. For more information on Caltrain Electrification, please visit www.CalMod.org/Construction or sign-up to receive notices as www.CalMod.org/Get-Involved

Parking Impacts

Please note some spaces in the temporary parking lot located on the eastside of the Hillsdale Station will be unavailable due to the construction work.

Separately, construction work for Caltrain Electrification will occur in the parking lot south of Hillsdale Avenue. For more information, visit CalMod.org/SanMateo.

We apologize for any inconvenience while this important safety improvement project is being constructed.

Hillsdale Station Closure Update

The temporary Hillsdale Station closure is now expected to begin spring 2020 (this does not impact the length of the closure which is six months). For more information visit  www.caltrain.com/HillsdaleTempClosure.

Background

Caltrain, in cooperation with the City of San Mateo, will raise the tracks and slightly lower the road (grade separate) at E. 25th Avenue in San Mateo. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce local traffic congestion in San Mateo. In addition, the project  will create new east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues; and as part of the project improvements, Caltrain will build a new elevated Hillsdale Station with updated amenities at E. 28th Avenue.

In order to maintain regular train service, some activities will be conducted during nights and weekends, outside of normal train service hours. Neighbors may experience construction noise and light during these times. Please note that the Hillsdale Station will temporarily close for six months for the building of the new elevated Hillsdale Station. The temporary closure is targeted for spring 2020. To learn more, please visit www.caltrain.com/HillsdaleTempClosure. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The overall project construction is expected to be complete in spring 2021.

pcepCaltrain Electrification

Caltrain Electrification

Caltrain  Electrification is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization program which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor from San Francisco's 4th and King Caltrain Station to approximately the Tamien Caltrain Station.

The primary purpose of Caltrain Electrification is to improve Caltrain system performance, reduce long-term environmental impact by reducing noise, improving regional air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An electrified Caltrain system would better address Peninsula commuters' vision of increased service and improved travel times in an environmentally friendly and reliable way. This also is expected to help accommodate increase system ridership through improved system operations.

For information on upcoming community construction update meetings, please visit the Caltrain Electrification Project events page at http://CalMod.org/Events.
