July 13 to July 19, 2019

Construction is advancing along the Caltrain corridor! To accommodate the brand new electric trains, construction crews will began work in the four San Francisco tunnels starting in October 2018. That weekend work has concluded and Caltrain has restored regular weekend service to and from San Francisco

CONSTRUCTION

SSF
South San Francisco Station Improvement Project

Night/Weekend Work

At night on Monday, July 15, to Friday, July 19, crews may be out working on utility line relocation, potholing, trenching and installation of utility boxes. Nigh hours are from 6:00 p.m to 6:00 a.m.

There will also be night work along Poletti  Way between East Grand Avenue and Corporate Drive. From 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. the  Poletti Way Off Ramp will have one lane closed. From 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the  Poletti Way Off Ramp will be entirely closed

Weekday Work

Monday, July 15, to Friday, July 19, crews will continue street work and road improvements on Poletti Way between East Grand Avenue and Corporate Drive. Crews will also continue to install pole foundations and perform utility relocation work in the station area.

Neighbors may hear additional noises from heavy machinery and equipment backup alarms. We apologize for any inconvenience these activities may occur.

Traffic Notices

Poletti Way Traffic Notice

After the completion of the South San Francisco Station Project, Poletti Way will become a two-way street, with the Southbound lane being reserved for buses serving passengers at the new South San Francisco Station.

Linden Avenue Grade Crossing

Caltrain will continue installation of overhead wire along the corridor in South San Francisco as part of Caltrain Electrification. Vehicles may experience short delays at the Linden Avenue grade crossing during wire installation. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. SM
2 5th Avenue Grade Separation Project

Night/Weekend Work

At night on Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19, installation of the retaining wall panels may occur between 25th to 28th Avenues.

On Friday, July 19, the rail bridge installation is anticipated to occur the nights of July 19 and July 20, 2019. Construction times are tentatively 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. This necessary stage of the project will involve a crane (expect back-up alarms) and temporary lane closures during construction hours on E. 25th Avenue. Signage and flaggers will allow for bi-directional traffic. Once the rail bridge is installed, regular two-lane traffic on E. 25th Avenue will return; however, the temporary height restriction will continue through fall/winter 2020, until the street is lowered as part of the latter stage of the Project.

At night on Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19, installation of the retaining wall panels may occur between 25th to 28th Avenues.

Construction Work
Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19:
  • Leslie Street will be temporarily closed for approximately three weeks (for more information click here)
  • 2 5th Avenue north: Crews will work on the retaining walls, including installing rebar and wall panels .
  • Pedestrian Undercrossing to 28th Avenue: Crews will be trenching, installing lower retaining wall panels, backfilling and off-hauling dirt. Trucks may be used to remove the dirt.
  • 28th Avenue: Crews will work on the bents and on the platform ramp, forming the ramp walls.
  • 31st Avenue: Crews will be working on the bents as well constructing retaining walls and excavating. Please note trucks may be used to remove the dirt.
  • 10th to 14th Avenues: Crews may even out soil distributed in this location, install a drainage ditch to prevent any excess runoff, and hydroseed. Soil was originally distributed in this location in preparation for a future set-out track as a previous one was removed due to the grade separation project. No set-out track installation work will occur, as a construction contract has not been issued. A community meeting on this future project was held on June 11, 2019. For more information visit www.Caltrain.com/HP_Set-OutTrack.
  • Parking lots near 31st Avenue to the east of Hillsdale Station: Crews will be conducting AT&T utility relocation work.

On Tuesday, July 16, to prepare drivers of large vehicles for the temporary height clearance required once the rail bridge at E. 25th Avenue is installed, overhead clearance bars will be place on site at E. 25th Avenue/S. Delaware Street and E. 25th Avenue/Palm Avenue (see map on back). The clearance bars will be at 13 feet 10 inches, the clearance height needed at the new rail bridge before E. 25th Avenue is lowered permanently. The overhead bars allow large vehicle operators an opportunity to test for clearance or make other route plans during this temporary stage (for more information click here).

PG&E Pipeline Work
Starting on Monday, July 15, PG&E will start the final stage of work on its gas line relocation which includes the closure of Pacific Blvd. and intermittent lane closures on S. Delaware (between 25th and 28th Avenues) for up to seven weeks (more information here).

Parking Impacts
On Saturday, July 13 to Friday, July 19, 2019, there will be no access to the Caltrain temporary parking lot from 31st Avenue. Vehicles can access the lot from 28th Avenue at S. Delaware. Please note some spaces in the temporary parking lot located on the eastside of the Hillsdale Station will be unavailable due to the construction work.

Separately, construction work for Caltrain Electrification will occur in the parking lot south of Hillsdale Avenue. For more information, visit CalMod.org/SanMateo.

We apologize for any inconvenience while this important safety improvement project is being constructed.

Background

Caltrain, in cooperation with the City of San Mateo, will raise the tracks and slightly lower the road (grade separate) at E. 25th Avenue in San Mateo. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce local traffic congestion in San Mateo. In addition, the project  will create new east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues; and as part of the project improvements, Caltrain will build a new elevated Hillsdale Station with updated amenities at E. 28th Avenue.

In order to maintain regular train service, some activities will be conducted during nights and weekends, outside of normal train service hours. Neighbors may experience construction noise and light during these times. Please note that the Hillsdale Station will temporarily close in late 2019 for six months for the building of the new elevated Hillsdale Station. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause
Construction is expected to be complete in early 2021.

pcepCaltrain Electrification

Caltrain Electrification

Caltrain  Electrification is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization program which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor from San Francisco's 4th and King Caltrain Station to approximately the Tamien Caltrain Station.

The primary purpose of Caltrain Electrification is to improve Caltrain system performance, reduce long-term environmental impact by reducing noise, improving regional air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An electrified Caltrain system would better address Peninsula commuters' vision of increased service and improved travel times in an environmentally friendly and reliable way. This also is expected to help accommodate increase system ridership through improved system operations.

For information on upcoming community construction update meetings, please visit the Caltrain Electrification Project events page at http://CalMod.org/Events.
