Plenty To Be Proud Of

Summer has begun, bringing great weather to the Bay Area and plenty more passengers to our system. In fact, we set a pandemic-era record for ridership last month by serving more than 414,000 customers – an 80 percent increase compared to our winter low point in January. In June, we’ve seen two major events bring huge crowds to Caltrain to celebrate both Pride and the Warriors Parade. Thanks to Caltrain’s dedicated workers and robust service, we were able to ensure even fans in Gilroy could get up to the city and give Draymond a high five in person.

This month, Caltrain’s Centralized Equipment, Maintenance and Operations Facility (CEMOF) completed construction on new features to support electric trains. Our Board also adopted its budget for the new Fiscal Year while our leaders in Sacramento continue to stand up for much-needed transit funding. And we had our own mini celebratory event with two more electric trainsets shipping out from the Stadler facility in Salt Lake City.

Our dedicated team remains laser-focused on ensuring electrified service can begin in 2024. As you make plans for the summer, be sure to consider Caltrain as a safe, reliable, convenient, and affordable transportation option for getting to your destination.

CEMOF Upgraded for Electrified Service

Caltrain’s Centralized Equipment, Maintenance and Operations Facility (CEMOF) has received an upgrade. Modifications were made in preparation for electrification including extending the vehicle pit, creating a component test room, and installing a movable platform to allow for inspection and maintenance of the new electric trains. These improvements are already being put to good use with the first two of the 19 electric trainsets.

Caltrain’s $90.9 million capital budget will be funded through a combination of federal, regional and state grants, local funding and member agency funding. The Golden State Warriors triumphed in the NBA Finals, and Caltrain was clutch in delivering fans both to the games and to the championship parade on Monday, June 20. Approximately 9,000 Warriors fans rode Caltrain to the San Francisco Station that morning, marking an impressive day for the agency as its ridership numbers continue to bounce back from the pandemic. Caltrain congratulates the Warriors and their fans, and looks forward to getting people to the games next season.
