Caltrain's Michelle Bouchard speaks with the media in front of the new electric trains

Thanks for a Great Transit Month!

It’s Transit Month here in the Bay Area, and we felt it was time to go big or go home. So we debuted our electric trains for the first time, and judging by the response, 2024 can’t come soon enough.

As some of our strongest supporters and elected leaders set foot on the train for the first time, you could see the joy and excitement on their faces. We have been calling the electrification of Caltrain a transformative project for a long time, but it felt truer than ever when we saw how everyone reacted to the first electric trainset at our San Francisco Station.

Obviously, there is still a lot of work yet to do. But we are more convinced than ever of how vital this project is, and we hope to ride this wave of energy all the way to the launch of electrified service in 2024.

Electric Trains Make Their Debut

Caltrain representatives were joined by federal, state, regional, local officials and community leaders on Saturday, September 24, to celebrate the first electric trains. These state-of-the-art vehicles will transform service from San Francisco to Silicon Valley with faster, greener, more frequent and flexible service, and allow corridor communities to breathe cleaner air.

The new trains serve as the centerpiece of Caltrain Electrification and the excitement at the event was palpable, as attendees had their first chance to see and tour these high-performance trains. Caltrain plans on holding additional opportunities for the public to get on board the new trains in early 2023.

Caltrain Hosts Representatives from National League of Cities

Caltrain played host to local leaders from across the country on September 22, welcoming representatives from the National League of Cities. Guests were greeted by Caltrain Board Member Shamann Walton and Caltrain Chief Communications Officer Casey Fromson, and rode Caltrain from Palo Alto to San Jose Diridon Station. Guests learned about Caltrain’s transformative electrification project, a collaborative effort between all levels of government.

Additionally, Caltrain Board Member Dev Davis participated in a panel discussion on the transit oriented development project being planned for the San Jose Diridon Station area along with representatives from SJDOT and Google. Caltrain deeply values our relationship with city leaders and we are excited to highlight the many great projects happening in the Bay Area region.

Bayshore Station Rehabilitation Begins

On Monday, September 19, construction on Caltrain’s Bayshore Station Overpass Rehabilitation Project began. This will result in the partial closure of platforms that will affect how riders board and disembark from the train. The project will remove and replace the coating on the station’s pedestrian bridge and stairwells to ensure the overpass remains safe and fully functional for years to come. The overpass will remain open during construction, with only half of the bridge under construction at a time to allow riders to pass through with minimal impacts.

New Schedule Includes Improved BART Connections, More Service to SSF, 22nd Street

On September 12, Caltrain launched a new weekday schedule, featuring reduced wait times for passengers connecting with BART in the evenings, while increasing service to the South San Francisco and 22nd Street Stations. BART and Caltrain evening connections have shrunk to 9-16 minutes. The newly renovated South San Francisco Station, whose ridership growth is the highest in the system, will now be served by two trains per hour, per direction. Additionally, 22nd Street Station will be served by additional trains in order to better connect it to Silicon Valley employment centers.

Caltrain Proclaims September Rail Safety & Suicide Prevention Month

For most people living and working along the rail corridor, the sight of Caltrain operating daily service up and down the Peninsula is commonplace. However, complacency around a heavy commuter train and relatively open access to the rails can lead to tragedy. To highlight the importance of safety around train tracks and the high rate of intentional deaths on the rails, the Caltrain Board of Directors adopted a proclamation designating September as Railroad Safety & Suicide Prevention Month during its monthly meeting, and the agency participated in a PSA, conducted a rail safety outreach blitz onboard trains, targeted enforcement at crossings and held a suicide prevention training for its staff.
