Weekend Service Back to Normal, Heralding the Start of the Summer of Caltrain

Caltrain has seen 12 weekends of reduced service this year, but it is helping to quickly and safely finish the Electrification Project. During this time, 59 poles were erected and over 251,000 feet of wire was hung as part of the Electrification Project. 

However, the next three weekends will be on the regular schedule as we approach the Summer of Caltrain, where good weather and exciting public events bring larger crowds into the system. There’s no time like the present to get onboard Caltrain and see what the Bay Area has to offer.

Contract Awarded for Mountain View Grade Separation

The Caltrain Board of Directors awarded a Construction Manager/General Contractor contract for the Mountain View Transit Center Grade Separation and Access Project. The project will improve safety and multimodal access to the transit center and downtown Mountain View, closing the Castro Street crossing and building a separate pathway for pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross the Central Expressway. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2024 and be completed in 2026.

Final Phase of Bayshore Overpass Rehabilitation Begins

The Bayshore Station Overpass Rehabilitation Project has entered its final phase of construction, where the pedestrian bridge and stairwells will have their protective coating replaced, ensuring it will remain safe and functional for years to come. Construction will close the overpass to riders, so Caltrain is running shuttle service between platforms so they can move from one to the other safely. This $6.87 million project is expected to be completed by August of this year.

Big Crowds for Bay to Breakers

Bay to Breakers, the beloved San Francisco tradition celebrated by revelers throughout the Bay Area, again brought jubilant crowds to Caltrain on Sunday, May 21. Two northbound special event trains brought nearly 3,000 salmon, pink gorillas and just about everything else you could imagine out in huge numbers on their way up to the City. Caltrain remains proud to be a part of this delightful event and to help everyone get home safely afterwards.

Caltrain Riders Love Bike to Wherever Day

With 20% of Caltrain riders accessing the system via bicycle, Caltrain was proud to celebrate Bike to Wherever Day on Thursday, May 18. Caltrain, in partnership with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and in recognition of National Bike Month, welcomed cyclists at five energizer stations along the Caltrain corridor including those at or near the Millbrae, San Mateo, Menlo Park, Sunnyvale and Gilroy stations. Energizer stations were equipped with snacks, coffee and free swag to encourage more people to feel comfortable riding their bike.

We have been very proud of our refreshed website, which launched last year, as it provides the information our riders need most, front and center. However, that doesn’t mean we’re done. The Caltrain Board of Directors voted to recognize May as Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Caltrain is a system that is open to everyone. We in the Bay Area are fortunate to live in a diverse, vibrant community, and Caltrain is honored to provide transit for everyone who calls the Bay Area home.
