Exciting Milestones Along the Caltrain Corridor

This past month has brought more big news for Caltrain. We just hosted our second successful public tour of the new electric trains, and the public’s enthusiasm for these beautiful new vehicles hasn’t waned since we first showed them off in July.

We continued to make significant progress on the electrification infrastructure by installing our last pole for the Overhead Contact System (OCS) and conducted full speed tests of the new trains to ensure they can operate safely and effectively.

On top of that, we made our first announcement of how our service will improve after electrified trains enter service; changed our weekday schedule to increase service to Morgan Hill and Gilroy and adjust times for better BART coordination and got our conductors some spiffy new uniforms – all while celebrating Transit month!

We’ve got plenty more work to do, so as always, I look forward to seeing you on board soon.

Second Electric Train Tour a Huge Success!

The first chance to see Caltrain’s fleet of the future was a big success, and enthusiasm has not died down. Over 4,000 people came to see the new electric trains in San Francisco, and the excited crowds could barely wait for their chance to get on board. Devoted rail fans, Caltrain commuters and neighbors joined the event to experience the new trains for themselves, partake in food trucks, Caltrain raffles and a live DJ. Thanks again to our partners and everyone who came. We look forward to our next electric train tour in San Mateo County next year!

Electrification Comes Closer with Completion of Three Major Milestones

September marked three major milestones in the Electrification Project, bringing the launch of electrified service ever closer. The final pole for the Overhead Contact System (OCS), which provides power to the electric trains, was installed in San Francisco. The signal system at all Caltrain crossings have been upgraded, allowing electric trains to operate along the Caltrain corridor. Finally, the electric trains have now been successfully tested at maximum track speed of 79 mph. Much more remains to be done, but this terrific news means the completion of this project is just around the corner.

New Weekday Schedule Increases Service for Gilroy and Morgan Hill, and Provides Faster Local Trains

Caltrain began operating under a new weekday schedule that aligns better with the new BART schedule at Millbrae, provides faster local trains in the evening and increases Gilroy/Morgan Hill service with a fourth roundtrip train. Caltrain will continue to run its highest ever level of service, with 104 trains every weekday. This optimized schedule will help Caltrain continue to grow its ridership, while also accommodating necessary ongoing construction.

Another Successful Transit Month!

Transit Month is a local tradition, celebrating everything great about transit and how transit makes Bay Area life great. To mark the occasion, Caltrain chose September as the month for its San Francisco Electric Train tour, and Caltrain Executive Director is participating in the Transit CEO Ridealong onboard Caltrain today. However, every month is transit month on Caltrain, so don’t worry if you didn’t get a chance to ride as there’s still plenty of room for you on board!

Caltrain Conductors Debut New Uniforms

Caltrain’s train sets will have a whole new look next year, but our staff just went from drab to fab in a big way. The new uniforms are a bold red, making them more visible to riders in need of assistance as well as spectacular. Be sure to compliment our conductors for their bold new look!

Caltrain Celebrates Rail Safety Month

September is Rail Safety Month, and since safety is paramount at Caltrain, the agency made multiple efforts to get the word out about how to stay safe near our tracks. With the help of the Transit Police, Caltrain participated in Operation Clear Track, making traffic stops at Broadway Avenue in Burlingame when motorists drove through the crossing unsafely and illegally. There was also a rail safety booth at the San Francisco Electric Train Tour, helping to teach kids about the best practices to stay safe when near trains. Remember to stay on the correct side of the yellow line, and always remember to stay safe when using Caltrain.

Caltrain Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The Caltrain Board voted to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month in September, in order to acknowledge the many cultural contributions made by Hispanic Americans. Caltrain is here to serve everyone, and we are proud to celebrate the diversity that has made the Bay Area a vibrant and wonderful place to live.

In light of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the Bay Area, Caltrain is monitoring the situation and following local public health agencies and CDC guidance regarding public meetings.
Caltrain is implementing a bold service vision for the future with a series of infrastructure and planning projects to modernize the system. Central among these projects is Electrification, which lays the foundation for a faster, greener, cleaner, and more reliable system for everyone.
