The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

5 p.m. - The Holy Eucharist, Rite II

A service at the Crossing in the Church

with music for choir, organ, and congregation

[This service will be Livestreamed]

On Sunday, September 13, Calvary will have no morning services because of Rosh Hashanah. Instead, we will have one service, in person and livestreamed, at 5 p.m. We welcome our friends from Tree of Life Congregation during the Jewish High Holy Days and are happy to share our worship space with them. They will be using our building for their services on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, from the evening of September 11 through 13, and for services on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, from the evening of September 20 through 21.

We will return to regular service times of 8, 9, and 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 20.

Agape Deadline

The deadline for submission of news and notices for the next issue of our newsletter is Friday, September 11, 2026. Please email your text to calvary@calvarypgh.org or deliver it directly to the church office.

Celebrating the Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen

The Rector

Our rector, Jonathon, is retiring and his last day at Calvary will be Sunday, September 27. Please join us that day if you can. Jonathon will preach at all three services. After the 11 o’clock service, we will celebrate Jonathon and his service to Calvary during the Parish Picnic.

To thank Jonathon for his service to Calvary, we are collecting a financial gift, often called a purse, to present to him on September 27. If you would like to make a financial donation to Jonathon’s gift, please write a check to Calvary Church with a note for “Jonathon’s purse.” As well, we have created a large “farewell” card for everyone to sign. Look for it on the table in the Parish Hall. If you can’t sign the card in person, you can mail a card of your own to the church or send an email to Kim Pieratt, Parish Administrator (kpieratt@ calvarypgh.org) and we will present it to Jonathon that day.

Ministry Fair

Sunday, September 20, 2026

Join us as we celebrate Calvary's many ministries! The Ministry Fair is the perfect opportunity to discover new ways to get involved, connect with fellow parishioners, and learn how Calvary members serve our parish and the greater community. Representatives from each ministry will be on hand to chat at tables in the Parish Hall following each of the three services. Enjoy some breakfast treats as you browse the tables and pick up a brochure summarizing each ministry.

it’s Time for the Parish Picnic!

picnic

Mark your calendar and join us for our annual parish picnic in the Swan Garden and Parish Hall on Sunday, September 27, the day of our patronal feast, St. Michael and All Angels. This is also our Rector’s last day before his retirement, and we will be celebrating Jonathon and his service to Calvary at the picnic. The parish-wide picnic and celebration will begin immediately after the 11 o’clock service (about noon). Everyone is welcome.

Calvary will provide fried chicken, hot dogs, drinks, and a cake to celebrate Jonathon. We’re asking that attendees provide a salad or a side dish for the picnic. Please bring enough to serve 8-10 people.

Many hands make light work. We’re looking for people to help with set up, food preparation, grilling, and clean up. Please contact Kim Pieratt, kpieratt@calvarypgh.org or 412.661.0120 ext. 111 to volunteer.

In the meantime, pray for good weather! We’ll still have the picnic if it rains, but a sunny day would be such a bonus.

20-30-40

20s, 30s, and 40s: Frick Museum: The French Moderns

Join us for a tour of the Frick to see the exhibit of the French Moderns! On Sunday, September 20 at 1:30 p.m., our own Don MacLeod will give us a tour of the exhibit. RSVPs are required to purchase tickets. Please RSVP  here.

Season of Creation

You may have noticed that we have added a petition for the healing of Creation in the prayers of the people this month. That prayer was added because this is the “Season of Creation,” an ecumenical effort, celebrated from September 1 through October 4 each year. It is a time during which Christians around the world are urged to pray for our common home and renew our commitment to its care and stewardship.

Feeding Our Neighbors

Calvary Church continues to contribute non-perishable food to the food pantry at the East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) throughout the year. These donations continue to be important, as the shelves aren’t always full. Particularly needed items this month are: peanut butter, jelly, canned corn, ramen, cold cereal, and any type of baking mix.  Thank you for continuing to fill the grocery carts in the lobby and for helping our neighbors in East Liberty and the surrounding areas of the East End.

Road trips, eight-ball pool, Andy Warhol Gen-X, food, faith, longing and loss are strung together across the 13 essays in “Homing,” published in 2024 by the University of Nebraska Press.
