Memorial Services
Nikki Smith

Amidst the ever present hope of Christ’s resurrection, it is with sadness that we share the news that parishioner Anica “Nikki” Smith died peacefully on Monday, September 9. A service honoring Nikki will be held at Calvary on Friday, September 20 at 2 p.m., with a reception in the Parish Hall following the service. All are welcome to attend. Nikki was a longtime and faithful member at Calvary. Earlier in her life she was very active in a number of Calvary ministries, which included the Annual Bazaar and serving on the vestry. Please join us in holding Nikki, her husband, Dave, her son, Brian, her sister, Lyn Orr, and her other family and friends in your prayers.

Rest eternal grant to your servant, Nikki, O Lord: And let light perpetual shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Parish Life Title
Rally Sunday

Rally Sunday Revamp!

Come join us on Sunday, September 15 for the new and improved Rally Sunday set-up! In years past, Parish Council has hosted a large cook-out style gathering after the 11am service for the parish community to come and eat and sign up for various ministries. This year will look a bit different. Each ministry will be present and represented, in the Parish Hall, after each of the three morning services: 8, 9, and 11 a.m. We hope this provides ample opportunity for folks from every service to have the chance to participate in the Rally Sunday activities and be able to meet representatives from each organization, as well as sign up for any ministry to which they feel called.

Parish Council, the Vestry, and members of each ministry will provide light breakfast foods for the morning, which will also be available after each service. A brochure summarizing each Ministry offered at Calvary will be available that day to help prepare you for what will be offered at Rally Sunday. Also included in the brochure, will be contact information for each ministry should you want to reach out with questions before the day. We hope this makes the event feel more engaging for folks across all three services and we hope you’ll join us after your service!

Priest Rabbi Title
Deanna Drawing

The Priest and Rabbi Class will resume in McClintic Hall (the choir room) on September 22 at 10 a.m. with a special session from our curate, the Rev. Deanna Briody, about the new congregation that she’s working to plant in Beaver County with Calvary’s support and partnership. Deanna will share about how she landed in Beaver County, how God drew her to ordination and grew her vision for ministry there, and how Calvary discerned a call to partner with Deanna by serving as the nesting parish for the new congregation. Please join us to hear about the vision for Church of the Incarnation and how all of Calvary can participate in making this vision a reality.

The following three weeks (September 29, October 6, and October 13), Rabbi Bisno and the Rector will lead sessions on the Jewish High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur) comparing and contrasting various Jewish and Christian ideas including forgiveness and atonement.

Gospel & Breakfast

All Calvary Young Adults (CYAM) and Parents of Little Ones (POLO) are invited to Gospel and Breakfast. Every Sunday at 10 a.m., we will come together for a delicious breakfast and a heartfelt discussion about the Gospel reading. The class will begin on September 22 in the Evans Room. For questions or more information, please contact The Rev. Bonnie-Marie Yager-Wiggan at byagerwiggan@calvarypgh.org.

Home Eucharist

Join us on Saturday, September 21 at noon for the Women’s Home Eucharist and potluck lunch. The service and lunch will take place at Pamela Abdalla’s home (524 Old Orchard Trl, 15238). You can RSVP to Kim Pieratt at kpieratt@calvarypgh.org or by calling the Parish Office at 412.661.0120 ext. 111. Please plan to bring a side dish or dessert.

Capital Campaign

Are you ready for some tangibles? Please visit the Capital Campaign table during Rally Sunday to see – and touch – items that represent some of the projects that are being undertaken with funds from the campaign. Also take a look at our updated tracking chart, which, as of this writing indicates 170 pledges and donations totaling $3,539,700!

By now, everyone should have received campaign information and pledge forms. Please do complete and return your form as soon as possible. If for some reason you have not received that information, let us know. We want to be sure that everyone has the opportunity to participate.

Chatham Baroque Garden

Chatham Baroque: A Garden of Harmony - Austrian & German Music for Strings

Friday, September 27, 2024 • 7:30 pm

Calvary Episcopal Church, Shadyside

Sunday, September 29, 2024 • 4:00 pm

Calvary Episcopal Church, Shadyside

The virtuosic compositions for string bands from late 17th-century Austria and Germany sit squarely in Chatham Baroque’s programmatic wheelhouse. Written for a lush array of bowed string instruments, this music is rich with ingenious invention, counterpoint, and mellifluous harmony. Joined by some of our favorite string-playing guests, this program features rarely performed music of composers Heinrich Biber, Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Antonio Bertali, Johann Hermann Schein, Johann Casper Ferdinand Fischer, and Georg Muffat.

Coffee Hour

Now that Summer is over, it’s time to sign up for our weekly Coffee Hour again. We are looking for groups and any individuals to volunteer to organize refreshments for our Coffee Hour each Sunday following the 11 o'clock service. If you are interested in either sponsoring or helping let us know by emailing Kathy Farrington at farringtonk@me.com.

Bookstore Heading

Do you want to volunteer, but have a limited amount of time? The Bookstore at Calvary is always looking for volunteers. As little as two hours a month is all it takes for this very worthwhile ministry. Contact Cindy Pepples at lucindapepples@gmail.com, stop into the Bookstore to ask any staff how you can help, or visit our table in the Parish Hall today during Rally Sunday after one of the three morning services to learn more about volunteering opportunities.

The Bookstore is open on Sunday from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call the Bookstore at 412-661-0120 ext. 133 (please leave a message) or email at bookstore@calvarypgh.org and we will contact you.

Bookshop

You can support the Calvary Bookstore both in-person and now online. Instead of using Amazon to find any books that you are interested in, please turn to Bookshop.org, type zip code 15206 in the Bookstore Near Me box, click on Calvary Bookstore, then the red Support this Shop! box. You will be taken to the Calvary Bookstore homepage on their site where you will find suggested readings. You can also use the search bar to find most any book your heart desires. The books will be sent directly to you.

Calvary Community
Bazaar Date

The Bazaar committee has already had a meeting and is planning the return of all your favorite tables – holiday flowers; handmade goods; linens and boutiques; jewelry, baked goods, and gourmet foods. The silent auction, Attic Treasures and the New to You room will also return. As you clean out your closets, put aside any donations you may have for the cause. Or if you have some spare time, knit some mittens for the Handmade Table or pull out your favorite jelly recipes for the Gourmet Table

For years, Women of Calvary headed up the Bazaar. But this spring the group transitioned to the name Calvary Community, which is open to men and women of the church. Everyone is welcome to be involved in all aspects of the Bazaar – both in its planning and on sale day. New volunteers are always welcome. Contact Kathy Farrington farringtonk@me.com for more information.

Still Point cover

Spiritual Reflection –

At the Still Point

Adult spiritual formation may be described as the step-by-step discovery of God’s presence in our lives and our personal transformation along the way. Calvary’s Spiritual Reflection meetings continue to be a regular and familiar forum for small group sharing and prayer.

For this term we use At the Still Point: A Literary Guide to Prayer in Ordinary Time, compiled by Sarah Arthur. This book is an unordinary guide for the season from Pentecost to Advent –- a collection for “a journey of the imagination guided by scripture as well as poets and authors, both classic and contemporary, who have known the things of God but speak in metaphor.”

Meetings are held in the Evans Room from 7-8 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday evening of each month. The meetings are hybrid, allowing “in person” conversation while others join remotely using Zoom. Upcoming meeting dates are September 17, October 1 and 15, and November 5 and 19.

Email Matt Muldoon (mattmuldoon@msn.com) or Sondra Krimmel (sskrimmel@gmail.com) for information or to be added to the email list. Please feel welcome to join us at any time.

Contemplative Prayer

The Contemplative Prayer group meets for silent prayer and reflection, both in person and on Zoom Mondays at 7 p.m. in the Evans Room. For more info and a Zoom invitation, contact Lucy Weingartner at lweingartner20@gmail.com

An Invitation to Participate in Sacred Ground

There continue to be sessions of Sacred Ground going on at various locations throughout this year. Please encourage friends, family, fellow parishioners and other congregations or faith based groups to participate. There are some very positive changes to Level 1 based on feedback from the surveys from participants. This gives us time to implement some of the new initiatives with a larger body of people (less readings, more up to date articles, more discussion time, and only 9 sessions). “Sacred Ground” Level 2 is for those who took Sacred Ground Level 1 and want a deeper dive into the content with much more dialogue, more research and a focus on individual or collective action. The level 2 sessions consist of 7 sessions. We ask that every parish make this information about the locations available to all of their parishioners. The first Sacred Ground Level 2 series was a huge success!

If there is an interest in parishes wanting to host a Scared Ground Level 1 or 2 later in the year, please let Shahnaz Alam-Denlinger at s.alamdenlinger@episcopalpgh.org. She needs to train any leaders who want to lead these new sessions on the created content. All of the sessions will be made available via zoom. We will be offering a summer 2024 Sacred ground level 1 and Level 2 for those participants who want to participate via Zoom. The Scared Ground Level 1 at St. Thomas has started.

New and improved Level 1 Session (9 weekly sessions) for Sacred Ground at St. Thomas starting Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 6 PM. Dinner will be provided. Sessions will also be available for Zoom participation.
