Ministry Fair

Sunday, September 20, 2026

Join us as we celebrate Calvary's many ministries! The Ministry Fair is the perfect opportunity to discover new ways to get involved, connect with fellow parishioners, and learn how Calvary members serve our parish and the greater community. Representatives from each ministry will be on hand to chat at tables in the Parish Hall following each of the three services. Enjoy some breakfast treats as you browse the tables and pick up a brochure summarizing each ministry.

Celebrating the Reverend Jonathon W. Jensen

The Rector

Our rector, Jonathon, is retiring and his last day at Calvary will be Sunday, September 27. Please join us that day if you can. Jonathon will preach at all three services. After the 11 o’clock service, we will celebrate Jonathon and his service to Calvary during the Parish Picnic.

To thank Jonathon for his service to Calvary, we are collecting a financial gift, often called a purse, to present to him on September 27. If you would like to make a financial donation to Jonathon’s gift, please write a check to Calvary Church with a note for “Jonathon’s purse.” As well, we have created a large “farewell” card for everyone to sign. Look for it on the table in the Parish Hall. If you can’t sign the card in person, you can mail a card of your own to the church or send an email to Kim Pieratt, Parish Administrator (kpieratt@ calvarypgh.org) and we will present it to Jonathon that day.

it’s Time for the Parish Picnic!

picnic

Mark your calendar and join us for our annual parish picnic in the Swan Garden and Parish Hall on Sunday, September 27, the day of our patronal feast, St. Michael and All Angels. This is also our Rector’s last day before his retirement, and we will be celebrating Jonathon and his service to Calvary at the picnic. The parish-wide picnic and celebration will begin immediately after the 11 o’clock service (about noon). Everyone is welcome.

Calvary will provide fried chicken, hot dogs, drinks, and a cake to celebrate Jonathon. We’re asking that attendees provide a salad or a side dish for the picnic. Please bring enough to serve 8-10 people.

Many hands make light work. We’re looking for people to help with set up, food preparation, grilling, and clean up. Please contact Kim Pieratt, kpieratt@calvarypgh.org or 412.661.0120 ext. 111 to volunteer.

In the meantime, pray for good weather! We’ll still have the picnic if it rains, but a sunny day would be such a bonus.

20s, 30s, and 40s: Frick Museum: The French Moderns

Join us for a tour of the Frick to see the exhibit of the French Moderns! On Sunday, September 20 at 1:30 p.m., our own Don MacLeod will give us a tour of the exhibit. RSVPs are required to purchase tickets. Please RSVP  here.

Children's Choir

Long-time parishioners will know that the singing voices of children have been sorely missed in our services for some years. So it is exciting that, beginning on September 27, interested children aged 5 and up will have an opportunity to work closely with Sarah Nadler and Guy Russo, focusing on everyone’s God-given instrument, their voices. Sarah and Guy are long-time section-leaders of the Calvary Choir, and also bring particular experience and expertise working with young children; they are familiar to many of Calvary’s children through their weekly assistance with music in the Children’s Liturgy of the Word each Sunday. Jon Tyillian and I will work alongside them, as well.

This new (and optional) offering is aimed at helping our children to cultivate their voices and skills in the hope of relaunching a program for young choristers here. They will gather at 9:15 on Sunday mornings in the Refectory (not McClintic Hall as mentioned in an earlier announcement). They will work together for 30-40 minutes, finishing in good time to transition to Christian Formation classes in the 10 o’clock hour. Singing as a group in church soon will be one of their first goals, and I eagerly look forward to hearing the group take shape and develop.

Interested parents are asked to be in touch with me by email with any questions (alewis@calvarypgh.org), or by using the QR Code below to register children on-line.

Evening Prayer

The service of Evening Prayer (prayers at the end of the day’s work) will continue each Thursday in the All Saints Chapel at 6:30 p.m. through November 19. The service is about 20 minutes long and includes Psalms, Scripture, and Prayers for the day (but no sermon or music).

Praying at certain points of the day has its origins in Judaism and was practiced in the early church and monastic traditions, and it is one of the Daily Offices found in our Book of Common Prayer. If you have questions or are interested in helping to lead this service, please contact
Steve Shandor (steve.shandor@gmail.com) or
Michael Salmon (oriolefish@gmail.com).

Blessing Animals 2026

Calvary will hold its Blessing of the Animals service on Saturday, October 3 at 10 a.m. in the Circle Drive (on the Shady Ave. side of the church). Note the different location! We are moving the place for the service this year, because of the partial closing of the Swan Garden with the ongoing work on the boilers.

The Blessing of the Animals service includes prayers, a short reading, and each animal is blessed individually. We’ll also have a prayer for our pets who are no longer with us. Bring your pet, or a photo of your pet, to be blessed that afternoon. Human and animal treats will be served.

For their happiness and safety, please keep your pets leashed or otherwise in your loving care.

All are welcome to join us at this beloved annual tradition.

Feeding Our Neighbors

Calvary Church continues to contribute non-perishable food to the food pantry at the East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) throughout the year. These donations continue to be important, as the shelves aren’t always full. Particularly needed items this month are: peanut butter, jelly, canned corn, ramen, cold cereal, and any type of baking mix.  Thank you for continuing to fill the grocery carts in the lobby and for helping our neighbors in East Liberty and the surrounding areas of the East End.

All families registered for Children's Programming are invited to our Parent Meeting and Open House. We ask that at least one parent or guardian from each family be present. We'll gather in the Refectory, where we'll share everything you need to know about the year ahead, including updates to our program and information about the new children's choir. We'll then move to the classrooms, where you can meet your child's catechist.

We can't wait to begin another year of children’s programming at Calvary. Hope to see you there!

CLW Cameron

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLW) at the 11 o'clock service resumes on October 4. This is a special time for children to pray, ask questions, and hear the good news of God’s love. The Sunday scripture readings are proclaimed and explained on a level appropriate to children 4 years and older. Any child in this age group may participate - no registration is necessary.  Children are invited to gather with adult leaders after the Opening Prayer and process to the Refectory. They return to their families at the time of the Peace Offering. If you are running a little late and miss the beginning of the service, no worries! Drop in and join us in the Refectory.
