A Message from the Rector

Dear Friends in Christ,

The story was told about two men walking down a Mexican beach, talking with one another. They could see a man in the distance throwing something into the ocean. As they got closer, they saw that he was bending over, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.

There were starfish all over the beach which were left by the outgoing tide. The man was throwing them out where they could swim away. One of the two men asked, "What are you doing?" The man replied, "I am throwing the starfish back out to sea. If they don't get back into the deeper water, they will die." The other man replied, "I understand that part, but look at this beach. It is covered with starfish. There must be thousands stranded out here. How do you feel that this will make a difference?"

The man bent over, picked up another starfish, hurled it out to sea, and with a smile on his face said, "Made a difference to that one!"

The needs around us are great and can seem overwhelming. Yet each one of us can "make a difference" to someone. As St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “we can do no great things, only small things with great love.” The truth is, when it’s done with great love, small things become great things.

Strawberry Sunday Coffee Hour June 14, 2026

The Fellowship Committee will be providing a special Strawberry Sunday Coffee Hour this Sunday June 14^th in the Reception Room. Please join us after the 10:00 a.m. service for fresh strawberries, strawberry shortcake or sundaes as a special seasonal treat. Coffee, tea and lemonade will also be available.

Hands to Hearts Meeting June 17

Hands to Hearts Knitters and Crocheters will meet next Wednesday, June 17 at 11 a.m. in the Reception Room. Ongoing projects include hats and mittens for Friends of Night People, lap blankets, worry dolls, pocket hearts, mastectomy inserts, and baby blankets. Newcomers are welcome to join.

Calvary’s Pastoral Care Ministries Committee would like to recognize the great accomplishments of our congregation’s amazing young people, but we don’t want to miss anyone, so we need your help! Stephen Dyson Memorial Service

The memorial service for Stephen Dyson will take place at 10 a.m. on August 8 at Calvary Episcopal Church.

Parish Picnic

This past Sunday, 85 parishioners gathered in Hughson Hall for our Parish Picnic. The menu featured grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, a delicious assortment of homemade salads and side dishes, sliced watermelon, chips, and a variety of ice cream novelties for dessert.

A sincere thank you to the 30+ volunteers who set up Hughson Hall, grilled the food, provided sides, greeted attendees, served refreshments, assisted with children's crafts and games, and participated in the cleanup. We are truly grateful for the time and energy you contributed to making this fellowship event a wonderful success.

In-Person Safe Church Training: Register Now

We all want young people to grow up healthy and safe, and the church should be a haven. To protect children and vulnerable adults and to raise awareness of church leaders, diocesan Safe Church Training is required for

• Clergy
• Church staff (Paid & Volunteer)
• Volunteers who work with or around children or youth
• Vestry members
• Persons who want to be a licensed Eucharistic Visitor
• Volunteers assisting vulnerable adults.

Training courses are offered online for those who wish to work at their own pace.

Two dates are offered for in person training at the Diocesan Ministry in Tonawanda. Choose either Saturday, July 25 OR Wednesday, July 29. Lunch is included as part of your day. Register here.

Once completed, your training is valid for 3 years. If you are employed by Calvary, a state mandated sexual harassment course is required annually also. Contact Alice Brown to check what Calvary has on record about your safe church status.

A Prayer for our Bishop Search

Gracious God, we give thanks for your loving care for the people of the Diocese of Western New York and the members of the Bishop’s Search and Transition Committees. Give us wisdom and understanding as we discern your will. We ask for the gifts of honesty, to speak the truth in love; openness to the gifts and ideas of others and to the Holy Spirit; and willingness, to see your Light shining among us and on the path ahead. Prepare for our Diocese a bishop who will be a faithful pastor, and equip us for the ministries to which we are called in these changing times. Help us to love and serve your world and one another in the Spirit of Christ, trusting in you to be our steadfast helper and guide. Amen.
