November 2024

November is National Caregiver’s Month. This year’s theme is “I Care.” Although we care much for others, we need to remember to take care of ourselves so we can care for those we love effectively. Airlines tell us to put our own masks on first before assisting others. If we fail to do so, we are not able to help the other passengers. It is the same with caregiving.

Tips on Self Care

  • Be active. Find something active that you enjoy. It could be walking, dancing, gardening or playing with a pet. Even short periods of exercise are beneficial.
  • Eat well. Eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of healthy foods and make sure you drink plenty of water each day.
  • Prioritize sleep. Aim to get 7-9 hours each night.
  • Make time to relax. Watch a favorite television show, read a magazine or work on a hobby.
  • Reach out for support. Talk to a friend, seek counseling from a mental health professional or join a support group. You can contact the Office on Aging for a list of in person and virtual support groups and free mental health counseling for persons 60 and older.
  • Be kind to yourself. You don’t have to “be cheerful” all the time. While we certainly do not want to be “a downer,” feelings of sadness and frustration are understandable and are sometimes part of life. Express your feelings by writing in a journal or talking with a friend.
