Sister's Choice
Location: Sister's Corner
8905 Chesapeake Ave., North Beach MD 20714
With a multitude of quilt block patterns available, the decision was an easy one for sisters Kathy Brookes and Carol Koenig, owners of Sisters' Corner since 2007. Their research led them to the naming of the Sister's Choice block by the Ladies' Art Company in St. Louis about 1890, in honor of British novelist Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra. They were devoted sisters and lived as single women in their family home their entire lives. Cassandra lost her fiancee early in her life and never married. Jane died while in her forties. Kathy and Carol knew that the Sister's Choice block was an ideal reflection of their lifelong love of reading, needlework and floral design.

ArtWorks@7th Presents: FACEts
Featuring the works of
Tracey Vernon, Linda Owens
and Suzanne Nawrot
August 3 – 27, 2023
Open House August 5, 1 – 4 PM
Facet: one side of something many-sided, a larger number of small facets preserves the size of the gem, a particular aspect or feature of something. This month's show celebrates the many facets of us as individuals, our transformations along the way, and the way the experiences weave together and mend us to be imperfectly perfect. This transformation is depicted in our art.
"The process I use for many of my portraits is to begin by using charcoal and water." says Tracey Vernon. "After a face begins to appear, I often scribble lyrics, scripture, or my thoughts into the sketch. I tear the portrait apart to represent the trials, tribulations, and grief we can experience in life. The transformation occurs as I reassemble the face onto my canvas incorporating the old and the new facets."
Linda’s whimsical pottery will surely make you smile! Yoga Betty is just waiting to hold your plants, while Face First and Poppy Red Lips have smiles that will light up a room!
For this show, Suzanne has created jewelry using wire wrapping and weaving. “I love how the wire transforms the cabochons. It can be challenging sometimes when the wire has a mind of its own. I have included cabochon faces in various poses: resting, smiling, mischievous winking. The faceted stones provide that sparkle that catches the eye.”
Our guest artist this month is Gail Chenevey. "I love making assemblages. I get to disassemble the objects I find and then reassemble the best of the bits into something new!” Three of her pieces you will see at the gallery are "The White Queen", "Steamroller", and "King Fisher".
Money spent locally stays in the local economy and continues to strengthen the economic base of the entire community. Small local businesses make indispensable contributions to communities and neighborhoods. Supporting local artists allows them the opportunity to continue to serve their communities. You will often see members of Artworks@7th supporting local charities and organizations by participating in art shows, teaching workshops, and donating items for fundraisers.
ArtWorks@7th is located at 8905 Chesapeake Avenue (near 2nd street) in North Beach, Maryland. Our summer hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
