Slow down, phones down: Stay focused behind the wheel.

Distracted driving is a growing and dangerous issue on our roads. When you’re driving, your full attention should be on the road and your surroundings – not on your phone or other distractions. Put the phone away, slow down and focus on safe driving. A split second of distraction can lead to life-changing consequences.

Take extra steps to keep your pets safe during the holidays.

New sights, sounds and visitors can stress pets and lead to unexpected behavior. Secure pets when guests are present and prevent escapes by keeping doors and gates closed. Be cautious with holiday foods, plants and decorations, as they can harm pets if ingested.

Learn more online and visit ASPCA.org for toxic food and plant lists.

As temperatures drop, it’s important to know how to stay warm and safe:

  • Warm-Up Locations: County community centers and libraries are open during regular hours for temporary refuge from the cold. For 24/7 warming areas, visit the Calvert County Detention Center or Maryland State Police Barrack U lobbies.

  • Protect Your Pets: Provide proper outdoor shelter, clean water and extra care during winter weather. Bring pets indoors when possible. Report unsafe conditions to Animal Control at 410-535-1600, ext. 2526.

Stay prepared and safe this winter!
