Spotlight: Fitchburg Crossing Project Wins Federal Grant
The City of Cambridge has been awarded a $2.4 million Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods (RCN) grant from the the United States Department of Transportation. The grant is for the design of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Fitchburg MBTA Commuter Rail tracks in North Cambridge. The project also includes planning and design of a multi-use path parallel to the rail line, creating connectivity to the bridge from many local points. The path will also provide more convenient access to the Alewife Red Line transit station.

The City will start the design process after securing the grant funds. We will continue the public engagement process that began during the feasibility study in 2023. We aim to understand community desires to help shape this connection between the Rindge Avenue neighborhood and Danehy Park.

Parking in Bike Lanes Survey

The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is conducting a study to recommend strategies to address the issue of vehicles being parked in bike lanes. The study will also review best practices in other regions and identify actions that cities and towns in the Metro-Boston area could pilot.

As part of the study, people who use bicycle lanes for bicycling have an opportunity to share their experiences by responding to a survey. For more information about this study, please contact MPO Transportation Planner Kyle Casiglio at [email protected].

Traffic Safety Reminders

The Cambridge Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit works all year to serve the community by enforcing the rules of the road. Our goal is to reduce the number and severity of crashes in Cambridge. Many of the current enforcement programs are a direct response to community complaints regarding speeding and other violations. The Department also spends time educating the public when there are any infrastructure changes, like new bike lanes or traffic patterns. We are committed to fostering greater traffic safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. We put this story together with some reminders for drivers and cyclists as we get into the warmer months and more people take to other modes of transportation to get around the city. Please check out these Tips for Safe Travel on the Community Development Department website.
The City of Cambridge is accepting nominations for the 2024 City Manager’s Outstanding Employee Awards and the Brian Murphy Award for Leadership in the Workplace and Public Service.
