Spotlight: Safety Improvement Project on Cambridge St
The City of Cambridge is launching the Safety Improvement Project on Cambridge Street, which will add separated bike lanes and make related safety improvements between Inman Square and Second Street.  As part of this project, we will:

  • Move bike lanes to be along the curb, separated from vehicles by white flex posts. 
  • Shorten crossing distances for people walking. 
  • Reconstruct some curb ramps. 
  • Consider changes to improve the reliability and accessibility of MBTA Route 69 bus. 
  • Accommodate outdoor dining. 
  • Reduce on-street parking to one side of the street at a time.

The City will introduce the project to the public with three events: 

Wednesday, November 29: In-Person Open House from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Valente Branch Public Library (826 Cambridge St) 
Saturday, December 2: In-Person Open House from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Millers River Apartments (15 Lambert St)

Wednesday, November 29, 9:00–11:00 AM (Hybrid: City Hall Annex and Zoom) 
The Net Zero Transportation Plan will help remove greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in Cambridge. The Advisory Group is composed of community organizations that serve or represent Cambridge residents.
Wednesday, November 29, 4:00–6:00 PM (Cambridge Public Library Valente Branch, 826 Cambridge St)
This will be the first in-person project open house for the Safety Improvement Project on Cambridge Street.

Tuesday, December 5, 6:00–8:00 PM (Lesley University, University Hall Second Floor, 1815 Mass Ave)
The Cambridge Department of Public Works invites you to attend our open house to learn more about the Mass Ave Partial Construction Project (Linnaean Street to Waterhouse Street) and see updated designs. Wednesday, December 6, 12:00–2:00 PM (Hybrid: Zoom and City Hall Sullivan Chamber) 
The Ordinance Committee will meet to hold a public hearing on potential changes to the Cambridge Municipal Code, Chapter 12.22 Cycling Safety Ordinance as detailed in Policy Order POR 2023 #147. You may find the City Manager’s response to POR 2023 #147 for background (see City Council Information from the October 16, 2023 City Council Meeting, page 82).
Wednesday, December 6, 3:00 PM (Hybrid: Zoom and City Hall Sullivan Chamber) 
The Health and Environment Committee and the Transportation and Public Utilities Committee will hold a public hearing to discuss options for amending parking fees and regulations throughout the City in order to further support the City’s goals of low carbon travel.
Tuesday, December 12, 6:00–8:00 PM (Virtual)
This will be the first virtual community meeting for the Safety Improvement Project on Cambridge Street.
Wednesday, December 13, 3:00 PM (Hybrid: Zoom and City Hall Sullivan Chamber) 
The Neighborhood and Long Term Planning, Public Facilities, Arts and Celebrations Committee will hold a public hearing to continue the discussion from the recessed meeting on September 27, 2023, which was on the future treatment of Jerry’s Pond, specifically the Rindge Avenue edge as it affects the community.

The City will share some concepts for the city-owned lots in the Central Square City Lots Study. This will be a virtual community meeting to review the sites, present draft recommendations for their future uses, and receive additional community feedback on the proposed options. Bluebikes Station Suggestion Map
The City has launched this suggestion map to help us identify where there is the most demand for new Bluebikes stations. On the map you can select areas in Cambridge where you would like to see a new Bluebikes station, show support for that area by "hearting" it, and add a comment on why a new station there would be helpful. You may suggest as many locations as you would like.
