Winter Tree Care
Sidewalk salt can help to avoid slippery sidewalks, but it can also damage our city's trees. Take a moment to observe salt/deicer use in and around your tree. Where does the salt end up? Does it pile within your tree pit? Deicers are a better choice for trees and the environment than salt—encouraging your neighbors to switch is a great way to advocate for trees.

Help keep chemicals out of tree wells and waterways by shoveling first, avoiding chloride-based deicers, and using de-icer sparingly.
Species Highlight: Paperbark Maple
The paperbark maple (Acer griseum) is striking in the winter. The colorful bark peels into thin strips similar to a paper birch. This unusual tree stands out among other trees in the winter. Paperbark maple is a small, slow growing, and uncommon tree.

Specimens can be seen at Elm/Hampshire Plaza and Wilder-Lee Park
