Welcome Back!
Dear Alumni Camper,

Welcome Home! I hope this letter finds you healthy and in good spirits. As many of you know, I have the honor of being your Camp Director. This is a new chapter for me and my family. It is truly an honor to serve this community. I am ecstatic to be part of a camp community that is so special to many campers, staff, and alumni supporters!

I look forward to many years of creating memories and life-changing experiences with all of our campers and, hopefully, you. Whether you attended Camp Max Straus or Camp Bob Waldorf, you will always be welcome in our community. I understand how summer camp can change lives because it changed mine. My childhood camp experience impacted me in positive and profound ways. That’s why I became a Camp Director and have worked in summer camps for over 25 years. I still feel I owe a debt of gratitude for what summer camp provided. That’s what I think about every time we welcome a group of campers to Camp Bob Waldorf.

I am humbled by the opportunity to keep the mission of Camp Bob Waldorf alive. By carrying the torch onward to the next generation of campers and staff, I hope we can light that spark inside them. I want our campers to learn to be a positive influence in their neighborhoods, homes, and most importantly, in their own lives.

Thanks to all of you who have supported Camp Bob Waldorf with your time, treasure, and talent. This community is bigger than the sum of its parts and would not be what it is today without your sacrifice, generosity, hard work, and commitment.

I am excited that my family and I get to be part of the Camp Bob Waldorf family and a tradition of excellence set over the past 82 years. I am dedicating myself to ensuring that Camp Bob Waldorf is set up for success for the next 82 years and beyond.

Welcome Back home!

Describe your experience at camp.

Camp Max Straus and the Witherbee Program were some of the most memorable experiences in my life. As a camper I really enjoyed evening programs, learning new songs, and all the comradery of the camp. As a Counselor in Training (CIT) at camp, I had an awesome time mentoring campers and making good friends with them. During CIT off-time, I spent many hours with the horses, riding them and shoveling droppings. Both were therapeutic activities. Witherbee was such an amazing experience. It introduced me to a world of camping I did not know existed. Hiking to Jenny Lakes was just breathtaking. Playing "Blind Eagle" was also so much fun.

What impact did camp have on you?

One of the biggest positive impacts camp had on me was growing my self-confidence. For example, in the Witherbee Program, completing the long hikes and surviving in nature without amenities like running water really made me feel like I could do anything and accomplish any task, no matter how tough. I think this directly played a role in inspiring me to reach high and pursue a PhD in engineering.

What you are up to now?

In 2016, I finished my PhD in engineering with a focus on Materials Science. Since then, I've been working at SpaceX and aiding in sending astronauts to the International Space Station. Currently, I'm a Senior Engineer in the Materials Engineering group at SpaceX. My goal is to send the first humans to Mars (talk about reaching for the stars...). More importantly, I recently became a dad to a 2-year-old daughter, Kira, and 3-month-old son, Nikolai. They are a handful, but I know we'll get through anything thanks in part to my experiences at camp.
