BURN CAMP NEWS AND UPDATES

Summer Burn Camp

We are incredibly excited to get back to in-person summer camp at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, CO. Summer Burn Camp will run from Monday, August 16th through Sunday, August 22nd. While camp will be modified to keep campers and staff safe, we know kids need camp now more than ever and can’t wait to welcome campers in August!

We’ve been hard at work planning for in-person camp this summer. Our dedicated team of professionals are committed to our campers. Rest assured we will provide the best opportunities to keep everyone safe during these unprecedented times. Our COVID-19 protocols are being developed in concert with Cheley Colorado Camps, Larimer County, CDPHE, and CDC guidance. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we cannot allow visitors into camp this year and community members will be unable to attend Play Day. We’ll look for ways to engage and to come together as a community in the fall.

Courage Classic - S'more Courage

Our inaugural Courage Classic team has launched in support of the Burn Camps Program! S’more Courage is a group of dedicated volunteers raising money for Children’s Hospital Colorado hitting the road for a day of riding over picturesque Rocky Mountain passes. This year’s tour includes routes ranging from 10 to 80 miles through the beautiful Rocky Mountains, starting and ending in Copper Mountain. Whether you ride, fundraise, donate, volunteer or sponsor the Courage Classic, your support helps provide lifesaving care for children at the region’s only nonprofit pediatric hospital.

Young Adult Retreat

We’re happy to announce the return of the Young Adult Retreat. This year’s theme is Connect and Empower and will be held October 28 – 31, 2021 in Evergreen, CO. This retreat-style learning experience is designed to identify and address unique areas of young adulthood transitions and develop life skills useful to burn survivors, ages 18-25. The program includes recreational activities and various workshops to address topics including relationships, body image, goal setting, and developing a personal mission statement. Participants identify strengths to build on and areas of needed growth within their own lives. In an emotionally safe and supportive environment, participants share experiences, thoughts, and feelings, which creates opportunity for growth and a support network of peer burn survivors.

Community Updates

Camper and Burn Ambassador Creates Burn Journal

When she was burned, current Burn Ambassador, Elizabeth Marr, and her parents found the healing process to be a difficult journey and time intensive, with lots of information to document along the way. Together, they created a book called, “My Burn Journal: Daily Care Log and Healing Tracker” to simplify the documentation process and to monitor and track the healing process for other burn survivors. The “My Burn Journal” books are available for sale on Amazon at the links below:

As part of her role as a Children's Colorado patient ambassador, Elizabeth raises money to help send other kids to burn camp. This week-long experience has illuminated her own bravery and reminds her that she is not alone. She therefore plans to donate a percentage of the sales of “My Burn Journal” to the Burn Camps Program.

Fire Muster | Saturday, June 19th

Join the Burn Team at the 35th annual Mile High Hook and Ladder (MHHL) Fire Truck Parade & Fire Muster on Saturday, June 19, 2021. We’ll be near the other vendors at the Children’s Hospital Colorado Burn Program Booth. Additional family fun includes food, antique firetrucks, and the Children’s Colorado helicopter. DFFCF Charity Golf Tournament

The Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation is hosting their 33rd annual Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Fox Hollow Golf Course. The event supports the Burn Camps Program; burn survivors; doctors, nurses, and therapists in the burn care field; widows and orphans of Denver firefighters; and firefighters and their families who are going through significant medical or financial hardship.
