One More Virtual Burn Camp… Winter Camp 2022
|
|
As COVID-19 continued to limit the possibility of big group gatherings, we made the difficult decision to hold the 2022 Winter Camp program virtually in early February. The virtual program consisted of three, two-hour Zoom calls featuring activities, fun, group discussions, and condo time together. This program typically takes place in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where campers are challenged both on the mountain, perfecting their ski and snowboard skills, and learning through small group sessions in the evening. While we missed our in-person time with this community, we made the most of the situation by enjoying a pizza and game night with Steamboat Firefighters virtually and learning and growing together.
This year our theme was Pause… to connect… inspire… breathe… dance… stretch… rest… spark joy… heal… and reflect. We sent each camper and staff member a customized “Camp In A Box” filled with room decorations, a camp t-shirt, a journal, stickers, craft activities, camp gear, snacks, and a gift card to provide one meal for the family for the week. This provided all campers, age 13-18 years old, the opportunity to be a part of the Burn Camp community until we can see everyone again on the slopes at Steamboat Resort in February 2023!

2022 - 2023 Burn Ambassadors
|
|
An early walker, Ella was just 11 months old when she leaned against the hot glass of a gas fireplace resulting in deep contact burn injuries to her palms. Her parents rushed her to Children’s Hospital Colorado. There, she was treated by the head of the Burn Center, Steven Moulton, MD. Beyond the expert care that Ella received that night and subsequently—including multiple skin grafts on both her hands and years of occupational, rehabilitation and physical therapy—her family also received the emotional support they all needed to heal. As a middle schooler, Ella attended the Children’s Colorado Burn Camps Program and it helped her process some of the upsetting experiences she has faced. Today, Ella has big plans for her future. She is an accomplished pianist, loves to draw Japanese-style anime and wants to be an illustrator when she grows up. Donate to Ella’s fundraising page.

Will, a high school student, was seriously injured in the summer of 2020 when a small smoke flare – the kind sold alongside sparklers at roadside fireworks tents – malfunctioned and exploded in his hand. The accident left Will with painful burns along his right palm, thumb and index finger. He was treated at the Burn Center at Children’s Hospital Colorado and has participated in the hospital’s annual Burn Camp ever since his injury. “Everyone at the Burn Center helped me with my wounds and hand therapy so that I could have a great outcome from my injury,” Will says. BCER A-Basin Fire Hose Race Raises $30,000!
|
|
The 15th annual Fire Hose Race was held on Friday, February 25, 2022, at Arapahoe Basin. Hosted by BCER, corporations and fire departments from across Colorado team up to participate in a unique slalom-style event. Teams of five race down a 15-gate slalom course while holding on to 50 feet of fire hose. And you can't miss them - all participants must dress in bunker gear including a firefighter jacket and helmet! This year’s event raised a record $30,000 for the Burn Camps Program! We are incredibly thankful to BCER for once again hosting the event and to all the sponsors and participants.

Family Camp | June 17 – 22, 2022 | YMCA of the Rockies | Estes Park
We’re excited to announce that Family Camp will be in-person for the first time since 2019. Recovering from a burn injury often goes beyond the burn and includes emotional healing for parents and siblings as well. Family Camp provides an opportunity for families to share their stories and live together in a supported environment while learning and growing with each other.
Summer Camp | August 15 – 21, 2022 | Cheley Colorado Camps | Estes Park
We met with Cheley Colorado Camps last month and we’re planning for in-person camp this summer. The safety and well-being of our campers, their families, our volunteers, and our staff, is of the utmost importance to us. We are taking all possible and appropriate measures to ensure everyone has a safe experience at all our camp programs. Applications for both campers and staff will be available very soon. We’ll be in touch when applications are being accepted.
Young Adult Retreat | January 2023 | Evergreen/Conifer
The Young Adult Retreat is designed to address the specific issues facing young adult burn survivors between the ages of 18-25. The program includes recreational activities and various workshops to address topics including relationships, body image, goal setting and developing a personal mission statement. In an emotionally safe and supportive environment, participants share experiences, thoughts, and feelings which creates opportunity for growth and a support network of peer burn survivors.
Winter Camp | February 2023 | Steamboat Resort | Steamboat Springs
Older campers 13-18 years of age who have shown an interest in participating in camp beyond just the summer, are given the opportunity to attend Winter Burn Camp held in Steamboat Springs, CO. Campers are challenged to translate their experiences on the slopes into real-life lessons to take back with them after the skis and boards have been returned. As a reminder, Winter Camp will now take place in February annually.
