Update: Kona Storms Impact Camp Mokulēʻia

We thank everyone for their prayers during the recent storm system that wreaked havoc across the islands. We share an update from Camp Mokulēʻia that went out yesterday, March 24. We ask that you keep them and the hundreds of flood victims in your prayers as a challenging road to recovery begins.

(The following is from an email released BY Camp Mokulēʻia dated March 24, 2026.)

On March 13, 2026, the first Kona Storm hit Camp Mokulēʻia bringing lots of rain and wind gusts of up to 100 miles per hour. The winds caused significant property damage and left the camp without power for 3 days. Thanks to the hard work of our staff and volunteers much clean up was completed during the following week.

The second Kona Storm arrived on March 20, bringing record rainfall (some say our area received as much as 16” of rain the first 24 hours of the storm). Flooding in the Waialua and Haleiwa areas has been significant and the camp was without power for another 3 days. Most of the camp was under 1 - 2 feet of water. The flooding that occurred during the second storm caused more damage than the first storm.

Damage from first Kona Storm:

Due to heavy winds during the 1st Kona Storm the camp lost about 10 trees. One of these trees caused damage to 3 of our Challenge Course elements (including our zip line) and one tree totaled a staff member’s car. This storm also caused damage to our front gate, several fences, a couple of roofs, and created several large sink holes in front of our seawall.

Damage from second Kona Storm:

Due to extremely heavy rainfall the second Kona Storm caused flooding throughout most of the camp. Flood water washed away a significant portion of soil under two of our tentalos. One of these tentalos is now sitting about 5 feet below the surface and one was washed out on the beach. Our Swimming pool was covered in flood water and is now full of mud and extremely brown water. Also, the sink holes created by the first storm were enlarged. Cleanup is needed thoughout the camp and beach.
