Should Women Stop
Enlisting in the Military?
  Nov. 17, 2015

Hey all:

This e-newsletter is one week late but timely and relevant today for our veterans.  Is it time to turn back the clock on the Women's Liberation and women's rights movement and rethink allowing women to join the military?

It's past time that we look at today's military and take strong actions to keep women out of harm's way.

One way to do this is by reevaluating job descriptions that women are allowed to serve in in the military and even think about discouraging women from joining the military all together.

It just might be time to stop women from serving in the trenches alongside of men on the front-lines.

If male soldiers think this will be the last days of their lives, they will probably not care what actions they take against women in their foxholes.  Is this what you want for your daughters?

In 2013, I watched the hearings on Capitol Hill, in Washington, DC, about punishment for soldiers who violate and rape female soldiers.

For those of you who have had your head in the sand and have not been keeping up with the story, please read the below alarming statistics about women in the military:
  • According to military and civilian statistics 4 out of 10 women reported being raped in the wars of Afghanistan and Iraq.
So a female soldier is more likely to be attacked by a male soldier than killed by military fire.
  • In 1991 over 200,000 female soldiers had reported being raped and today that figure is 500,000 (half a million).
  • Over 80% of sexual assaults are never reported so those figures are much higher.
  • The military has a partying and drinking culture.  Most of the men, no matter their rank, are drinking buddies.
  • They are the judge, jury and executioners.
  • If they have a failure to command, it affects their careers so they hide what is really going on.
  • The military can't sue the military.
  • Sex offenders are hunters.  The military is a rich environment for sexual predators.
  • They study the environment and 15% of them raped before the military.

The hearings focused on whether the military should allow punishment for male soldiers who rape women in the military, to be determined by a court outside of the military.

But like always they decided to keep it "in-house" through the military "chain-of-command," which means the abuses will continue to be covered up and male soldiers will continue to go unpunished.

When I left the comfort of my home in Georgia and joined the military in 1977, my reason for joining was to travel the world and I did.

I was never raped in the military but at every duty station, I was constantly sexually harassed by lower and higher ranking sergeants and officers.

During my three and a half years of military service, I worked primarily as an Administrative Specialist in Military Police Battalions, supervised by First Sergeants and Company Commanders.

While serving my duties, I frequently witnessed officers continuously "abuse their position of authority," especially against minority soldiers and females. This was my first introduction to any type of injustice.

Sexual harassment was rampant at many of the military bases. One of my military stations, Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Aberdeen, Maryland, would later become notorious for a sex scandal that changed the whole history of the military.

At APG, many female soldiers came forth to tell their stories of abuse and blatant acts of sexual harassment from their superiors. Because of their testimonies, the military's laws, rules and regulations changed forever.  I was really proud of these women.

When I look back at my military years, I remember many of the injustices I witnessed and they haunt me to this day.

The sexual misconduct in the military was just a preview that I would later learn, of the discriminatory practices which seemed to be sanctioned in the federal government.

As most of you know, all of my  22 non-fiction books are about bringing attention to the plight of others and solving problems in the community.

As a veteran, U.S. Army, and mother of 2 daughters, I would like to make a difference in the lives of women who choose to go into the military.

Just some of the military sex scandals include:
  • The 1991 Navy Tailhook Scandal -- The Tailhook scandal refers to a series of incidents where more than 100 U.S. Navy and United States Marine Corps aviation officers were alleged to have sexually assaulted at least 83 women and 7 men, or otherwise engaged in "improper and indecent" conduct at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada. The events took place at the 35th Annual Tailhook Association Symposium from September 8 to 12, 1991.
  • 1 996 APG Army Scandal -- The Aberdeen Scandal was a military sex scandal in 1996 at Aberdeen Proving Ground, a United States Army base in Maryland. The Army brought charges against 12 commissioned and non-commissioned male officers for sexual assault on female trainees under their command. Over 30 women filed complaints of assaults and rapes.
  • 2003 Air Force Colorado Springs Scandal -- The Air Force Academy sexual assault scandal in 2003 involved allegations of sexual assault at the United States Air Force Academy, as well as allegations that the alleged incidents had been ignored by the Academy's leadership.
  • 2012 Marine Barracks Scandal in Washington, DC -- This is where honor guards who perform for the President are stationed. Eight marine females claimed they were gang raped and sexual assaulted.

We Were Females First - Then Soldiers
Excerpts from Book

Just some of the ways women were violated in the military when I was on active duty include:
  • When female soldiers went on military training exercises and stayed in tents, drill sergeants would have sex with many of the female soldiers.
  • Women were constantly sexually harassed by sergeants and officers by being sexually touched or forced to listen to repulsive sexual remarks.
  • During alerts where we had to be in formation in a matter of minutes, Army officers would illegally enter female's rooms to watch them dress.
  • Men drill sergeants would place their feet on the rear end of women soldiers, when they conducted push-ups during exercise routines.
  • Women were forced to lift heavy ammo boxes, which resulted in internal female health issues, which sometimes put them on constant "sick call."
  • Women soldiers were encouraged and forced to walk, stomp and injure other fellow female soldiers, when they fell down during a march.
  • Pregnant women were still forced to join formations and participate in "police calls," which consisted of bending over and picking up trash, even when it was apparent that they were in their 8th month of pregnancy.
  • There were no compassion for women who had babies or when they were given OB/GYN exams.  Not only where women treated like a herd of cattle but they had to undergo exams by male doctors, without a nurse being present, like in the civilian world.

How To Raise Smart, Talented and Responsible Children: Dream Big Dreams
Excerpt:
CHAPTER 3
Give Your Children Love And Teach Them Discipline at Home

Love should always start at home. I told my daughters I would be there for them as long as they did just two things for me -- make good grades in school and take care and love one another.

Many kids go out looking for love in all the wrong places, especially young girls, simply because they are not getting it at home.

You have to instill values and principles into your children at a very young age. Remember words are powerful and you have to say powerful and positive words to your kids - often.

Your children need to know that there is absolutely nothing that they can't do with their lives.

I was very lucky to have worked for the federal government, which gave me time off work to care for my kids, unlike many jobs today.

My kids did not grow up in this GMO age, where over 90% of all foods in grocery stores today is contaminated with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), which is not real food.

However, it wasn't easy working in a male-dominated industry, U.S. Customs Service, where women were viewed as second class-citizens.

Despite having to work long tedious hours, and even go two days without seeing my daughters, I was still on the phone talking to my kids -- everyday -- finding out how their day went, about who they met and what they learned in school.

I had arrangements with other mothers to pick up and take care of my children - just like I picked up and took care of their children.

I wasn't hanging out or going out partying with these mothers - we were simply there to take care of our children.

If you don't discipline your kids then schools or police departments will. When it comes to discipline, students must learn discipline at home.

Parents must educate their children early to be respectful to police. Many parents rarely take time to research their children's rights and resources when it comes to the police.

As a result, the juvenile justice system places children as young as age 13 in detention centers, jails and prisons, where they can be raped and assaulted by adults. They become repeat offenders and the cycle is perpetrated.

It may be difficult now with the economy -- because of many parents, especially single mothers, working 2 to 3 jobs, but parents must try harder to reach out and discipline their kids at home.

Because of the value system I instilled in my daughters, I hardly ever had to punish my kids growing up. They never went through the terrible 2s or the terrible teenage years.

But when I did have to punish them, I would send them to their rooms. However, unlike today, they never had a TV, video games or other gadgets in their rooms -- so the only thing they could do was read.
