Help Your Camper Become a Future Counselor!

Do you have a young teenager who's an aspiring Summer Camp counselor? Sign them up for Counselor-in-Training, a two-week camp designed to teach our oldest campers the ins and outs of being a camp counselor at our Monroe County YMCA!

What is Counselor-in-Training Camp?

Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Camp teaches campers ages 13-15 the job skills necessary to be an attentive counselor and strong employee. The camp environment provides a unique opportunity for youth to build leadership skills, particularly in assisting counselors with younger campers. CITs can gain first-hand experience working with campers and the opportunity to cultivate skills and knowledge in the day camp setting.

How is CIT Camp structured?

CIT Camp is two weeks of full-day fun and learning! The first half of the camp day consists of various trainings, workshops, activities, lessons, team-building, and regular camp fun to give knowledge about what it’s like and how to be a counselor. During the second half of the camp day, each CIT will join an actual camp group to shadow a lead counselor and practice what they have learned.

At $200 for Y members, that’s just $100 per week for one session, which is a lower rate than all our other full-day, full-week camps!

Why should my teen become a CIT?

Campers become leaders at YMCA Summer Camp—especially our teens who join CIT Camp. Take it from seventh-year camper Alex and fifth-year counselor JC, who got together to chat about our Summer Camp and why Alex is excited to be a CIT this year.

How do I register my camper?

We are excited to offer two sessions of CIT Camp at both Y branches: Session 1 and Session 2.

Please note: Both Session 1 camps, one held at our Southeast Y and the other at our Northwest Y, will cover the same curriculum, and both Session 2 camps, one held at Southeast and the other at Northwest, will cover the same curriculum—but Session 1 and Session 2 curriculums contain different material.

Campers can register for both Session 1 and Session 2 to experience the full breadth of CIT Camp. While campers can register for both Session 1 camps, do note that they will cover the same material. The same applies to Session 2.
