From shelter to school

Greetings!

We had the privilege of working with two incredible young people this summer in our clinic: Fiona and Devin. Both are headed off to college, and we wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to them for spending their summer helping save dogs and cats.

We asked them both if they wanted to share a highlight from their summer working at WCHS, and this is what they shared. We hope they inspire you as much as they inspire us!

DEVIN:

"I learned a lot this summer, like blood draws, intubations, extubations, drawing up vaccines and how to set up and charge the anesthesia machines.

Working as a tech prompted me to actually switch my major to Biology to pursue a degree in veterinary medicine.

One memorable experience was assisting with an eye enucleation on a dog that came in, The dog was in bad shape and his eye was necrotic and bulging out of his head. The owners weren't able to afford an emergency vet, so Dr. Cote offered to do the surgery. It took about half an hour to get the eye out, and it made a huge difference to the dog and the owner.

Thank you so much for the opportunity."

FIONA:

"It's been so incredible working with the animals, but Duncan and Howard both have a special place with me. I loved getting to meet and work with both of them.

I've also really loved working with Dr. Cote, she's been so incredible with helping me improve and teaching me new things every opportunity she gets.

It's been very valuable to talk with her about schooling as well, since she went to undergrad at UVM too!

My favorite part of surgeries has been improving my blood drawing skills, especially on kittens. It's a skill I'm very proud of!

I have endless gratitude for everyone who has helped me and taught me things and it's been really nice to be able to connect with the shelter animals."

Walk for Animals!

Meet our adorable Walk for Animals mascots: Kuna and Waffles! We did a contest on Facebook to find a mascot, and we ended up with a near tie between two dynamic pups, so we had to choose them both! We also learned they are friends in real life, so we hope they enjoy this playdate.

We're getting ready for what's sure to be a fantastic Walk this year, and we're so grateful to all of you for helping us get the word out about this annual fundraising event benefitting shelter animals.

The great news is that there are so many ways you can help us reach our goal of $40,000.

Register and join us in person, register to offer virtual support, donate to our Facebook fundraiser, start your own online fundraiser, sponsor the event or donate gift cards if you own a local business, or gather cash and check donations from everyone you know!
