Dear Members of the UDC Community,
The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) has completed a preliminary review of the circumstances surrounding the near-drowning incident that occurred on our campus on Monday, July 20, 2026.
Based on the information gathered to date, the university has placed the UDC Director of Athletics, the lifeguards on duty at the time of the incident and the UDC Aquatics Manager on administrative leave while the investigation continues. This step allows the university to review the situation fully and fairly. It is not a disciplinary action and does not indicate that any of these individuals have been found of wrongdoing. This is intended to ensure the integrity of the ongoing review process.
While the Director of Athletics is on administrative leave, Dr. Ruthie Little-Berry, Chief Student Development and Success Officer, will oversee UDC’s Athletics operations and administrative matters to provide support for student-athletes and staff, ensure continuity of leadership and the uninterrupted operation of essential athletic programs and services.
The university recognizes the seriousness of this matter and remains committed to conducting a comprehensive, fact-based investigation. We will continue to gather and assess all relevant information, including the actions, responsibilities, decision-making, oversight and compliance of all individuals and entities involved.
Because the investigation remains ongoing, the university cannot comment further on personnel matters or potential additional actions at this time. The pool at UDC’s athletic complex will remain closed until the investigation and related safety review have been completed, and the university determines it is appropriate to reopen the facility.
University leadership, in collaboration with the appropriate administrative and operational offices, remains actively engaged in addressing this matter and ensuring that all institutional responsibilities are fulfilled. We are committed to a careful, transparent and accountable process that prioritizes the safety and well-being of our students, employees, visitors and community members above all else.
Please know that the safety of everyone who studies, works, visits and participates in activities on our campus remains the university’s highest priority. We are committed to understanding exactly what occurred, identifying any necessary improvements, taking appropriate actions necessary to uphold the standards of safety our community deserves, and to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
We appreciate the community’s understanding and continued support for the family during this time. Our thoughts remain with the camper and his family, and we continue to hope for his full recovery.
