Campus Learning Management System Update

Team,

I want to update the campus on the future of ISU’s Learning Management System (LMS). For the last 15 years, the University has utilized Moodle. After a year of analysis, we have decided that Idaho State University will be transitioning to Canvas as the LMS for the institution. Results of the summer 2023 pilot show that Canvas is the preferred LMS of both a majority of our students and the first choice of our faculty who participated in the pilot. This decision is both a student-centric result of adopting the end-user-preferred choice and is also choosing a more modern, faculty-user-friendly system. Each of our public four-year sister institutions in Idaho already use Canvas and have reported very favorably on their choice of Canvas as their LMS. This is a positive step forward for ISU.

Academic Affairs and Information Technology Services are working on a plan to fully implement Canvas by or before Fall 2025. As we begin this 18-month transition process, we will identify an external vendor to assist with the transition of all current course material from Moodle to Canvas. As with any major shift in such systems, this software implementation will not be immediately perfect and will take some time and require some amount of trial and error. However, I have full confidence in our team. This move will better support our students and align our academic technology to be a modern, and user-friendly system.

More information regarding this transition will be shared in the coming months.
