Campus Ministry Stories: Questions

Alex Godfrey loves wrestling with big questions of meaning, purpose and ethics. After forays into pre-med, microbiology, and philosophy, he found himself at home in moral philosophy and legal studies at the University of Northern Colorado. Beyond the classroom, he’s passionate about student affairs and is a wizard at parliamentary procedure.

Alex’s family didn’t attend church, but when he came to college, he found himself full of questions about religion. He quizzed his roommates of different faith backgrounds, and while he appreciated learning about their traditions, his experience remained intellectual rather than personal.

During a particularly challenging winter in his second year at the university, something shifted and he felt a desire to “do church in the proper way,” which led him to cautiously start researching churches within walking distance of campus. He was particularly looking for an LGBTQ+ affirming community that would fully and wholeheartedly welcome him.

Vaguely aware of Lutheran churches from his years at Lutheran preschool, Alex found his way to Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry. The warm, intimate community he encountered there welcomed him and all his curiosity. Room to wonder and ask questions, plus the abundance of home-cooked meals and leftovers, kept him coming back most weeks for dinner, worship, and community. “UNC is pretty small,” he said, “but at Lutheran Episcopal Campus Ministry I met people I would never otherwise have met.”

Alex became part of the student leadership team where he is excited to be able to give back to a community that has become a home for him. Campus Ministry has given him opportunities to leverage his interest in student affairs and grow his leadership skills as he thinks about next steps in his life after college, including possible careers in higher education or the US Navy.

Alex still has a lot of questions. But campus ministry “fundamentally changed” how he sees church, and “church is no longer big and scary.” Alex is grateful for the intimate community, and hopes to get involved supporting campus ministry long after he graduates.
