A note from the Dean

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

As we head into the final stretch of the academic year, I want to remind you of a very special event that will be held on campus next week.

On Friday, April 22, the library will host A Day of Celebration of Scholarship & Creative Expression (CSCE) featuring exhibitions, presentations, and showcases that highlight new and exciting work from students, faculty, and staff. I hope you will be able to attend some (or all!) of the presentations. This is a great way to learn about the scholarly and creative passions of your colleagues and students. A special thank you to those who have mentored students or are presenting your own work at CSCE.

Those of you who engaged in our strategic planning process in 2016 will recall the dream of a "sophomore milestone day," when all sophomores would present some culminating work from their Oxford education. We also sought to raise the profile of faculty scholarship. This year's Celebration is a major step to fulfill, and in fact connect, these goals.

Faculty, staff, and members of the Board of Counselors are invited to a closing reception in the library from 4:00–6:00 p.m. You are welcome to bring a guest. I hope to see you there and throughout the day.

Oxford in the news

Gary Glass, Director of Counseling and Career Services, spoke at the University of Pittsburgh's 2022 Mentoring and Advising Summit. His talk was titled "Beyond the 50-Minute Hour: Translating the benefits of mental health counseling into advising, mentoring, coaching, and other structures for supporting student well-being and success," and you can listen here.

Judy Greer, the now-retired longtime Oxford Tennis Coach and former Director of Women's Intramural Athletics, was honored with a "Heroes, Saints, and Legends" award by the Wesley Woods Foundation. Read more in The Covington News here.

The Covington News reported that the city council voted to "remove signs around Oxford that have sparked controversy because of the ways they portray the experiences of enslaved people in the city and Oxford College." You can read the story here. The decision came after Dean Doug Hicks requested to remove inaccurate signage on Oxford's campus—specifically at the Confederate cemetery on campus, Kitty’s Cottage, and Whatcoat Street.

Welcome, new staff

Ronika Alexander-Ortman has joined Oxford as a Senior Financial Analyst. She spent more than 11 years working in the public sector at The Georgia Department of Revenue in a wide variety of roles, most recently as an Audit Supervisor for Sales Tax and a point of contact for a multi-state taxing agreement on several committees. She is a native of Statesville, NC, and spent some time in the surrounding areas. Ronika holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting and is pursuing an MBA from Georgia State University.

Criminal Justice for the New Millennium

On April 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the Greer Forum, Oxford alumnus Judge Clint Rucker will give a talk titled "Criminal Justice for the New Millennium."

Clinton Keith Rucker is a national award-winning attorney, a municipal court judge, and a former Georgia Assistant District Attorney of the Year. Rucker retired from public service after 30 years as a prosecutor in Fulton County and the city of Atlanta. As a defense attorney with Garland, Samuel & Loeb, Rucker primarily specializes in cases involving civil rights violations and criminal defense. He is also a judge pro-tem for the city of South Fulton, Ga. and an associate judge for the city of East Point, Ga.

Good Friday at Oxford

The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life is hosting a Good Friday service on April 15 at 12:00 p.m. in the Oxford Chapel. They look forward to preparing for Easter with those who join. Everyone is welcome.

Emory Explores: Food Justice & Sustainability

Join the Emory Alumni Association on April 21 from 12:00–1:00 p.m. for an impactful conversation about food justice, food insecurity, and sustainability with Emory alumni Yaza Sarieh 18Ox 20C and Jamie Constantine 20Ox 22C. The discussion will touch on their work within the Global Growers Network. This is a virtual event.

OxChess is holding the Dean's Gambit Chess Tournament on Saturday, April 23 in the Greer Forum from 1:00–5:00 p.m. They would love to see more staff and faculty join in the fun with Dean Hicks.
