Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
Welcome to a new academic year! I look forward to working in partnership with all of you to help students settle into campus life and start—or continue—their academic journeys at Oxford.
Many of you have already met Kristin Bonnie, our new senior associate dean of academic affairs. She joined us in mid-July and has been busy settling into her role as a key member of our leadership team. In addition, please join me in welcoming new staff and visiting and adjunct faculty, along with six new assistant professors: Tien Chih, Mathematics; Sheldon Lawrence, Biology; Marvin McNeill, Music and African American Studies; Bamba Ndiaye, African Studies; Emorja Roberson, Music and African American Studies; and Masha Vlasova, Film and Media Studies. We plan to have many opportunities to help you connect and reconnect with all the members of our community. I hope as the new year begins that each of you finds time to connect with both old and new colleagues and friends.
Over the coming weeks I plan to share my priorities for the year—including taking stock of where we are, making plans to meet essential needs, combatting burnout, and reigniting community.
I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for those that are busy preparing for the start of the academic year. We are in full swing with some student leaders already on campus this week!
Best regards,
Ken

Faculty and staff spotlight: Kristin Bonnie
|
|
Kristin Bonnie joined Oxford this summer as senior associate dean of academic affairs, replacing Ken Anderson, who will return to the classroom after a year of sabbatical. Her new position entails working with the dean to oversee and enhance all aspects of Oxford's academic mission. Bonnie will also serve as acting professor of psychology—a subject she taught for 15 years at her previous stop, Beloit College, where she also was the associate dean of faculty and the learning experience. With these new positions she returns to her Emory roots, where she earned an MA and a PhD in Psychology.
"It is a privilege and an honor to be a part of the Oxford College community," Bonnie said. "I look forward to getting to know students, faculty, and staff, and to collaborating with you all to support and advance Oxford's innovative academic program and related initiatives."
Before moving into administration, Bonnie taught courses in Introductory Psychology, Biological Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics, Animal Cognition, and within Beloit’s various first year seminar programs. At Beloit, she was involved with multi-year institutional projects on topics including the development of student metacognition and reflective learning, decolonizing pedagogies and related DEI initiatives, and the development and implementation of a new strategic plan. She looks forward to bringing the lessons and skills she learned in these many projects to Oxford.
Bonnie began her own academic journey at St. Lawrence University, where she earned a BS magna cum laude with honors in Psychology and a minor in Biology. When she came to Emory for graduate school, she studied with renowned primatologist Frans de Waal. Bonnie's animal research runs deep: She was an adjunct scientist with Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo, and her scholarship focuses on learning and decision making in captive non-human primates. She has more than 20 publications to her name and has also given dozens of invited and conference presentations.
Next week we look forward to highlighting more incoming faculty and staff.
