A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Today marks the first day of classes for this new academic year. Thank you for the superb work that has been put in by staff to prepare our campus for welcoming students and by faculty to prepare for classes this fall. I hope many of you can join us for two special events later today. First, we will gather for a tree planting ceremony with President Fenves on the quad, near Seney Hall, at 4:30 p.m. This ceremony will recognize and honor the tremendous efforts and resilience of Oxford's community throughout the pandemic.

We will come together again this evening for the annual Convocation ceremony at 7:00 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium and at about three dozen sites across campus. This year we will hold Convocation in a unique way by gathering the sophomores and half of the Oxford faculty in the gym, while first-year students will join in Discovery Seminars with DSC faculty advisors at viewing locations in multiple academic buildings. The ceremony will also be live-streamed for those joining in remotely through this link.

Again, thank you for your dedication and commitment to Oxford's community. I look forward to seeing many of you later today as we formally open the academic year.

Best,
Doug

Ignite Leadership Program 2021
The Ignite Leadership pre-orientation program, a first-time collaborative initiative between Oxford College and Emory College, offered interested first-year students the opportunity to arrive on campus a few days early and learn more about engaging in the process of leadership at Emory, their college campus, the Atlanta area, and their classmates. The four-day program included small and large-group presentations and activities held on both campuses, as well as excursions to the Georgia Aquarium and the Atlanta History Center.

Coordinated by Veronica Roman, associate director of Student Involvement and Leadership at Oxford College, and Carson Banks, leadership and transitions program coordinator in Student Involvement, Leadership & Transitions on the Atlanta campus, and with the support of many faculty and staff on both campuses, the program hosted 126 student participants (68 Emory College and 58 Oxford College). Ignite students had the opportunity to build a sense of community and engage with faculty, staff, and student leaders before orientation programs began. Visit the program’s website to learn more.
