Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
Thank you to those who were able to make the faculty and staff listening sessions hosted by the Twin Memorials Working Group last week. We had more than 50 attendees and held productive conversations on the best way to honor the enslaved laborers who lived and worked on our campus. If you were unable to attend but would like to share your ideas, please do so here.
I invite you to encourage your students to attend an additional listening session specifically for them on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 8:00 p.m. at the Student Center. The group is also planning additional meetings for faculty and staff.
I’d also like to bring your attention to two events taking place over the next week.
First, the Science Gallery Atlanta is coming to Phi Gamma Hall on Friday at 1:00 p.m. for a talk titled “An Introduction to the Space ‘Where Art and Science Collide.’” Dr. Audrey Chang, Director of the Science Gallery, will discuss new engagement opportunities for faculty and students.
On Feb. 15, author and chef Matthew Raiford will visit campus for a reading from his new book Bress 'n' Nyam: Gullah Geechee Recipes from a Sixth-Generation Farmer, with a cooking demonstration and a tasting of recipes from the book. More information will be listed in an upcoming EaglePost.
These are just two of the many events that take place on campus every month. I hope you can find time in your busy schedules to attend these or others that interest you.
Best,
Doug

Beyond the 50-Minute Therapy Hour
|
|
Gary Glass, Director of Counseling and Career Services, will host a talk titled "Beyond the 50-Minute Therapy Hour: Re-examining Mental Health of College Students" on Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Williams Hall.
This event will explore the underlying issues that are common to those whose struggles range from stress to mental illness (and everything in between), particularly for those students expected to maintain "high achievement" in their pursuit. Glass will review national student data—and how Oxford students compare—and will explore ways to not only improve mental health but expand the ways in which we, as a campus and as a society, narrate the issues and challenges facing students, faculty, and staff on campuses. Students will be invited to think about how to advance this conversation, with suggestions for leadership development opportunities and academic research.
Encourage your students to attend this Oxford Studies event!

The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life recently launched Care Collective, a way to anonymously send care packages to those in our community who could use a little extra something or to someone who deserves a congratulations or thank you. Read more about Collective Care on Inside Oxford here.
The form currently only has options for students, but through a partnership with OSO, will soon offer care packages for staff and faculty (form coming soon). In the meantime, if you have staff/faculty requests please send an email to the Assistant Chaplain.

Southern Circuit Film Series: My Name is Pauli Murray
|
|
The Southern Circuit Film Series returns on Feb. 20 with My Name is Pauli Murray.
Told largely in Pauli’s own words, My Name is Pauli Murray is a candid recounting of that unique and extraordinary journey. Fifteen years before Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat, a full decade before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned separate-but-equal legislation, Pauli Murray was already knee-deep fighting for social justice. A pioneering attorney, activist, and dedicated memoirist, Murray shaped landmark litigation—and consciousness—around race and gender equity. As an African American youth raised in the segregated South—who was also wrestling with broader notions of gender identity—Pauli understood, intrinsically, what it was to exist beyond previously accepted categories and cultural norms. Both Pauli’s personal path and tireless advocacy foreshadowed some of the most politically consequential issues of our time.
Register to watch the film here.
