A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Dean of Emory College Barbara Krauthamer and I met with a small group of former Oxford students to discuss their transition and experience at Emory College. They had wonderful things to say about so many of you! I look forward to thinking through their suggestions and ideas.

This Friday, February 23, I encourage you to stop by the Staff and Faculty Game Night Reception in the library from 4:00–6:00 p.m. There will be food and fun arcade and board games to play like Pac-Man, pinball, and more. This is a great opportunity to gather with friends and colleagues in the midst of a busy semester.

I also recommend you visit the library’s excellent new digital exhibit, “The Work Is Never Finished: Building Inclusive Archives.” The exhibit explores early Oxford history and the university’s role in Native American dispossession and slavery. You can read more about how it can be incorporated into your classroom here

Warmly,
Badia

NAME: Andrew Gray
TITLE/DEPT: Senior Coordinator — Facility Planning and Operations
How long have you been at Oxford?
I have been at Oxford for two years, but in my current position for two-and-a-half months now. I work with my team to help ensure that the campus runs smoothly and efficiently. My primary focus falls mainly on the operations side, which focuses more on buildings and facilities and making sure they are running at peak performance.
What do you like best about your job and about Oxford?
I have grown to love the sense of community here at Oxford—especially having a team of colleagues that truly wants the best for you in both your work and personal life. I love that in my position I get to feel like a part of each department here on campus and get to have my hand on each facet of our campus and how it runs.
What is your favorite song/tv show/movie/restaurant/podcast?
It's always hard to pick a favorite, but currently my favorite music is anything by Noah Kahan or Teddy Swims, as well as Wintergreen by The East Pointers. I enjoy watching anime and the Naruto series would be my favorite; it really taps into the nostalgia of my inner child. If there is a good ramen joint, like Jinya or Kyuramen, I'm there!
What makes you happy or brings you joy?
My happiness comes from hanging out at home with my wife (Abelina: OES Administrative Assistant) and cats. We enjoy crafting, and lately I have learned how to crochet. There isn't anything much better than crocheting next to your wife with a cat in your lap!
Please complete this sentence: It might surprise people to know that I...
...have a BFA in ceramics, and can make a pretty good mug!

BE-SPOKEN Performance
On March 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Performing Arts Center, the show BE-SPOKEN will be performed by Emorja Roberson, Assistant Professor of Music and African American Studies. The title, BE-SPOKEN, is a nod to the term "bespoke." The work uses sacred texts and music genres to address themes of Black empowerment, justice for police violence within Black and Brown communities, and hope for a more prosperous future. During the worldwide shutdown, violent atrocities committed upon the Black community were unavoidably visible. Our nation, once again, struggles to reconcile its original sin of slavery and its lasting institutionalized legacy, racism. BE-SPOKEN is a cantata that explores the themes of loss and joy and celebrates Blackness. The work begins with a field song and moves through gospel, funk, and hip-hop. The text and music for the work was written by Emorja Roberson, Anthony T. Walker, and Chavis Gill (aka “King Chav”). You can purchase tickets here.
Polaroid Stories - OxTheater's Spring Production
An OxTheater Production of Naomi Lizuka's Polaroid Stories will be performed at Tarbutton Performing Arts Center on February 29, March 1, and March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and also on March 2 at 3:00 p.m. You can purchase tickets for the show here. Step into the gritty and fantastical world of Polaroid Stories by Naomi Lizuka, a raw and enthralling fusion of classical mythology and the harsh realities faced by street kids. This compelling narrative unfolds on the desolate outskirts of a city, where an abandoned pier becomes a haven for dreamers, dealers, and desperadoes. Inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, Lizuka weaves a tale where myth-making becomes a lifeline for those pushed to society's fringe.
Pathways Internship Funding
Pathways Internship Funding applications are now open. These one-time awards can reduce financial barriers that keep a student from saying "yes" to their dream internship, research, or applied arts opportunity this summer. Pathways funding can cover cost-of-living expenses such as airfare, housing, commuting, and food. Students can receive up to $4,000 for global experiences, $3,000 for domestic experiences. Students must have an offer in hand to apply. Priority deadline is March 24. You can learn more here.
