Dear Faculty and Staff colleagues,
Now that classes have begun and students are settling into a routine, I want to take a moment to encourage you all to utilize the COVID saliva testing facilities located in the Whatcoat Building. If you are regularly on campus for any amount of time, participating in weekly testing is one way to help ensure the overall health and safety of the Oxford community. Weekly testing can also be reassuring to you and your family as we all navigate our work and other parts of life.
You can sign up for a COVID test through the Emory Forward website at locations in Atlanta or on the Oxford campus.
Thank you for taking care of yourself and our community by testing regularly and practicing the 3 W's - wearing your mask, watching your distance, and washing your hands.
Best,
Doug

Southern Circuit Film Series: Cane Fire virtual screenings
|
Called one of 2020’s most exciting documentary films by IndieWire, Cane Fire will be presented in a special virtual screening February 7-11 for the Oxford community as part of the Southern Circuit Film Series hosted spring semester. The film’s director, Anthony Banua-Simon, will present a Q&A with the audience following the screening.
For most people, their idea of Hawaii is colored by years of Hollywood movies and popular culture depictions that cast the islands’ Indigenous people as background actors in their own story. Among the Kauai locals, nearly everyone has a story about being involved in a film or television production. Some were filmed on the Native Hawaiians’ sacred spaces, but tourists are only interested in the fact that Elvis was once there. Cane Fire examines the past and present of the Hawaiian island of Kauai through the lens of four generations of family history, numerous Hollywood productions, and found footage.
Director Anthony Banua-Simon is a documentary filmmaker and editor. His films have screened at venues such as the Brooklyn Museum and MoMA PS1, as well as the websites MUBI, Filmmaker Magazine, and Hyperallergic. In 2014, his short about the workers of the Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn, New York, Third Shift, won best documentary at the Brooklyn Film Festival. Anthony attended The Evergreen State College and was a fellow at the UnionDocs Collaborative Studio Program. He's currently a member of the volunteer-run Spectacle Theater in Brooklyn.
This event is made possible through the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, a South Arts program. Since its inception in 1975, Southern Circuit has brought some of the best independent filmmakers and their films from around the country to communities throughout the South. The program is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
