Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
I’m looking forward to next Monday, Jan. 31, when we will welcome back those who have been working remotely and resume in-person classes.
Next week also marks the start of the community engagement process toward creating design concepts for the memorials to enslaved laborers that are envisioned for the Oxford and Atlanta campuses. On behalf of the Twin Memorials Working Group, which I chair with Professor Gregory Ellison, I warmly encourage you to learn more and RSVP to a meeting or share feedback on the website.
Guided by the Baskervill design firm, we will host a meeting for the City of Oxford and Covington community, particularly local descendants of enslaved persons, as well as listening sessions with Oxford students, staff, and faculty. These meetings will help guide the imaginative process for monuments that honor the untold experiences, stories, and contributions of enslaved individuals and their descendants who lived on the university’s original campus here in Oxford—and educational programs to move us forward.
Here is the schedule for on-campus meetings:
- Oxford Staff Community Meeting: Feb. 3, 2:30–3:45 p.m. at Phi Gamma Hall
- Oxford Student Community Meeting: Feb. 4, 11:30 a.m.–12:50 p.m. at the Student Center
- Oxford Faculty & Staff Community Meeting: Feb. 4, 3:30–5:00 p.m. at Phi Gamma Hall
Your ideas and input are vital to this process, and I hope you will plan to attend one of these gatherings. Only by naming this history and continuing to honor those who came before us can we make Oxford the most diverse and inclusive campus possible.
Best,
Doug

Lunar New Year Temple Fair
|
|
On Monday, Jan. 31, Oxford Chinese classes, facilitated by OCSA and ACC, will offer a Lunar New Year Temple Fair at the student center from 5:00–7:00 p.m.
Dating back to Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BC), Lunar New Year has represented reunion, blooming, and hope. One of the most important traditions to celebrate is a family gathering on New Year’s Eve.
Starting January 26, students may find different QR Codes at various locations inside each building throughout our campus. Scan them and find information on different customs for celebrating the Lunar New Year.
What else you can do at the Spring Festival Temple Fair:
- Games (shuttlecock, traditional riddles, tossing rings) to earn a lucky bag;
- Ask our volunteers to write a Calligraphy Fu (Happiness); if you are good at writing Chinese calligraphy, come to write one by yourself!
- Enjoy the performance by our first Chinese Traditional Instrument Mini Orchestra that will bring traditional and modern New Year Songs;
- Try on traditional clothes and take pictures to save this New Year moment;
- Learn to make a dumpling to pray for a blessed New Year! (Beef and Vegetarian fillings available)

Southern Circuit Film Series: Proper Pronouns
|
|
The Southern Circuit Film Series returns on Feb. 6 with the film Proper Pronouns.
There are 30 transgender, ordained ministers in the United States; six are in North Carolina. Dawn Flynn, Mykal Shannon, Liam Hooper, and Debra Hopkins are battling narrow-mindedness within the religious community, their families, and NC natives. In order to live their authentic selves, some have thrown their loved ones into personal identity crises. They are bravely preaching from a pulpit despite the danger they face not only as a transgender person living in the South but also as transgender ministers navigating their way through local, state, and national governing bodies who decide what it means to be a human being.
Register to watch the film here.
