A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

This Friday, February 2—from 9:00–11:00 a.m.—Oxford HR will host a Valentine’s-themed breakfast in their office for the First Friday of the new semester. This is a great opportunity to share a morning meal and socialize with colleagues.

Last semester, I shared a list of strategic priorities for the next five years here at Oxford. As you may have heard at your OSO or Faculty meetings, you can share your input and ideas on those priorities with each Working Group at this link. I encourage you all to participate, as your diverse insights are invaluable to the development and execution of these priorities.

Warmly,
Badia

NAME: Kyra Frazier
TITLE/DEPT: Senior Admission Advisor — Office of Enrollment Services
How long have you been at Oxford?
I've been at Oxford working in OES for about 2.5 years as an admission advisor. I've worked closely with the Student Admission Association on campus and with our local high schools in Newton County. Between reading applications and recruiting through the fall, you can find me working on college access initiatives for prospective and admitted students.
What do you like best about your job and about Oxford?
Working at Oxford is like working on a big team, as offices rely on each other to give our students the best experience. I also love being able to work so closely with students on campus and getting to see them grow and transition to Atlanta and beyond!
What is your favorite song/tv show/movie/restaurant/podcast?
This one is for the true crime junkies (if there are any!): My favorite podcast right now is Sistas Who Kill, which is a true crime podcast examining cases related to Black women. I've been hooked for the past few months, and I love how the podcast interrogates the justice system for marginalized communities.
What makes you happy or brings you joy?
Spending quality time with my family and friends brings me the most joy. This is one of the reasons why I love the holidays, because it's the one time of year I get to see all of my family at the same time. I also love getting some fresh air walking around Atlanta and hunting for the newest and tastiest donut shop!
Please complete this sentence: It might surprise people to know that I...
...do makeup as a side business!

Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues:
We request nominations for the Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award. This award is presented to faculty members in each of the four undergraduate schools in recognition of a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching. Established by Emory Williams, a 1932 Emory College alumnus and long-time trustee, the award designation represents a university honor for teaching.

AWARD CRITERIA:
Award recipients hold a record of excellence in teaching, having made major contributions in their academic discipline to curriculum development, pedagogy, and educational innovation. They have earned the respect of colleagues both at Emory and in the larger academic community. In addition to a stellar academic record and the accomplishments above, and in keeping with Mr. Williams’s wishes, the award honors faculty who:
  • Foster participation, inquiry, and creative expression in the classroom
  • Exemplify the highest quality of teaching scholarship
  • Serve as a mentor to students
  • Currently teach undergraduate students
  • Retain a continual record of outstanding accomplishment and ongoing commitment to teaching
  • Make significant contributions that impact and advance the university through teaching.

To make a nomination, submit a 1–2 page letter of nomination that includes the nominee’s name along with clear and detailed examples of teaching excellence, mentorship of students, and significant contributions that have impacted and advanced the university through teaching. Nominations should be submitted to the attention of Dr. Kristin Bonnie, Dean for Academic Affairs, via email to [email protected] by Friday, February 16, 2024.
Memorial Service for Krisha Patel 24Ox
From Lyn Pace, College Chaplain

Dear Faculty & Staff,

As you saw earlier this month in a message from Dean Ahad and me, there will be a memorial service this Friday, Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m. in remembrance of Krisha Patel 24Ox, who passed away last semester. The service will be held in the Greer Forum of the Student Center, with a reception immediately afterward in the Mural Room. Everyone is invited to attend.

The family has asked those in attendance to consider wearing black since that was Krisha's favorite color. The service will include a number of remembrances and music to give us a space to grieve together while honoring and celebrating her life. I'm grateful to the students who have helped our office plan this service.

For those who would like to view the service virtually, please use this link. Also, the Emory Wheel published a piece about Krisha recently, and you can read that here.
Twin Memorials Project on Fox 5 Atlanta
Fox 5 Atlanta recently aired an in-depth piece about Emory University's Twin Memorials project on both the Atlanta and Oxford campuses. Dean Ahad was interviewed for the piece. Watch the piece here. The Twin Memorials project honors the enslaved individuals who are part of the university’s history. Read more about the project here.
