A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

As we continue preparations for welcoming back our students and the beginning of an unprecedented academic year, I would like to express gratitude for the life of a dear friend of Oxford and Emory, the Honorable John R. Lewis, who died last week. Two decades ago, he served as Oxford’s Mills Peace Lecturer. Congressman Lewis served as Oxford College’s Commencement speaker last year, and he called us to build an American and a global “beloved community” where everyone is included, and no one is left behind. I invite you to  watch the final part of his 2019 address at Oxford , which gives us an inspiring vision toward which to strive.

Thank you for all that you do for Oxford College, our students, and our community.

Warm regards,

Doug

Susan Ashmore , Charles Howard Candler Professor of History, participated in a virtual panel discussion on June 25 following an online, pre-premiere screening of clips from the documentary AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: THE VOTE . The program was a partnership of the Alabama Department of Archives & History (ADAH), Alabama Public Television (APT), and the Alabama Women's Suffrage Centennial Committee (AWSCC).

Olson says she and Pullen are working together across Emory campuses on the exciting interdisciplinary project as a feminist political theorist who studies "resilience" and a feminist medical doctor who serves people living with HIV/AIDS and opioid dependence.
During Pride month, Eric Solomon , visiting assistant professor of English & American Studies,  talked with Amy Li   of the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship in his capacity as editor of the "Queer Intersections" series with the journal  Southern Spaces.  The ongoing series celebrated its one-year anniversary June 27, 2020.

Solomon also created a collage, at left, to illustrate Joshua McCarter Simpson's 1854 poem "To the White People of America" for Jesse P. Karlsberg's  blog post with  Southern Spaces , published June 30.

Human Resources compiles local child care resources available during COVID-19
While child care options have been limited since the COVID-19 pandemic began, several camps and child care centers have begun to open. Child care resources have been posted to Emory HR Website’s Working Through COVID-19 page. In addition to centers and camps, there are also resources for in-home care, homeschooling, tutoring, and virtual programs.  View child care resources .  This limited listing is provided to help you in your search for care. As we find out about more options, we will make every effort to share them with the Oxford community. Please remember that the current situation is continually changing. Some of the centers or camps that are open now may need to temporarily close.

Whether you live in close proximity to the Atlanta campus or near Oxford, you can partner with neighbors or your children’s school peers to reduce costs and pool resources. You might also consider a nanny share or tutor share option in your neighborhood or community.

Some items to consider might be:
  • to find people with similar childcare/educational needs as yours do you need general daycare or tutoring or a mix of both?
  • partnering with someone who has children at a complimentary age range to yours such as infants, preschoolers, or school-age
  • the importance of racial and socioeconomic diversity within your group, as well as including students who are neuro-diverse and neurotypical
  • identifying people with like-minded values around COVID-19 related to social distancing, hand washing, and face coverings within your group
  • determining whether your group will need a certain number of hours per day of care or if it will be a drop-in situation
