Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
Last Friday, our first ever Spring Festival was a huge success. Thanks to the creativity and fast action by a remarkable team of Oxford staff members, we found a way to move our activities inside and create a memorable event for both our current students and those juniors and seniors who came back to campus from Atlanta.
More than 900 students, faculty, and staff attended the festival. This was the first time we had four classes celebrating Oxford together, and the feedback I’ve received from students, faculty, and staff has been overwhelmingly positive. I especially enjoyed watching students from different classes interact and seeing our juniors and seniors reunited in person (not on Zoom!).
Staff from across the college worked for months to pull this festival together. I am grateful to them and to faculty who reached out personally to their former students and engaged them at the reception. I’m already looking forward to next year!

David Gowler, Pierce Chair of Religion, was published in the National Catholic Reporter with his piece "Artist illuminates Jesus' radical message in the Way of the Cross" on Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, which you can read here.
The Emory Studies in Early Christianity series, which Gowler co-edits with Emory Professor Emeritus Vernon Robbins, recently published a new book titled "Apocalyptic Sheep and Goats in 1 Enoch and Matthew" by Elekosi F. Lafitaga.

Gwendolynne Reid, Assistant Professor of English, presented a paper entitled “Of gates and gateways: Lab-embedded writing fellows and the question of representation in science” at the Conference for College Composition and Communication (“4Cs”). The paper was part of a roundtable called "Invitations to science: Using STEM writing pedagogy to advance representation in STEM fields" that explored how writing programs and pedagogies could contribute to DEI efforts in science.

Jason Rosenholtz-Witt, Visiting Assistant Professor of Music, gave a virtual lecture at L'Ateneo di scienze lettere ed arti di Bergamo in Italy [The University of Sciences, Letters and Arts of Bergamo] as part of a series of public lectures on occasion of Venice's 1600th birthday. The title of the lecture—presented in Italian—was "Musica, crisi e la politica della Riforma a Bergamo nel primo Seicento." [Translation: Music, Crisis, and the Politics of Reform in Early Seventeenth-Century Bergamo"]

Salmon Shomade, Associate Professor of Political Science, had his piece "Colonial legacies endure in Africa’s legal systems — undermining rule of law" published in The Washington Post last week. You can read it here.

Stewart Zelnick 20Ox 22C was awarded “Best Undergraduate Student Paper” at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature Southeastern Regional. His paper was titled "Nationwide Anti-Mosque Activity: How Muslim Communities Protect Their Right to Religious Exercise Under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA)." OxTheatre's spring performance: Neighbors
|

On March 25 and 26, OxTheatre will put on its spring performance of Neighbors, written by Nikki Toombs in collaboration with the ensemble.
Synopsis: After the shooting death of an unarmed teen rocks a neighborhood in Ellicott City, the lives of this community are forever changed. Polarized by this tragedy, this community must decide whether to band together in solidarity or be further divided by more than property lines.

Come see the flamenco tablao performed by Julie Moon with Guitarists Juan Pedro Jiménez and José Chirinos on Wednesday, March 30, 7:30 p.m. in Williams Hall
In the spirit of back rooms and taverns of southern Spain, artists improvise guitar, singing, and dance in a performance that is raw and unrehearsed. This style of flamenco is known for deeply moving emotional expression and spontaneous musicality.
Julie Moon is a flamenco dancer and director of Berdolé Flamenco, which presents the art of flamenco in performance and education across the United States.
Guitarist Juan Pedro Jiménez has performed across southern Spain for years with some of the most popular musicians and dancers in that region
José Chirinos is a flamenco guitarist and composer who has worked internationally accompanying dancers and singers, including in the International Flamenco Biennial of Maracaibo in his native Venezuela
