A note from the Dean

Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Thanks to everyone who turned out for this year’s Staff Fest, our biggest and best yet. I’ve often said that staff are the lifeblood of Oxford, keeping us up and running year-round. I know how hard you work, so it is only fitting to end the academic year with a day of food and fun in your honor.

Further down the newsletter, you will see a list of Staff Award winners. It was a pleasure to present these and congratulate each recipient for their invaluable contributions to our community. Special thanks to Sarah Dobbs for organizing the Staff Awards Ceremony and to Susan Newborn, Raciquel Edwards, and Inza Thomas for orchestrating a great event. I also bestow extra brownie points to those who made it up the climbing wall.

I remind everyone that Oxford will be closed on Friday, May 27, making a four-day weekend through Memorial Day. In the spirit of the holiday, please remember those who have lost their lives in service to their country.

Oxford in the news

Gary Glass, Director of Counseling and Career Services, was one of 19 Emory staff members to receive the university's Award of Distinction. Glass "has transformed CCS’s approach to incorporate a philosophy of community-based counseling," the description reads. Read more about this tribute to Gary and the rest of the award winners here.

Oxford Chaplain Lyn Pace's latest column for The Covington News ran earlier this month. Its topic was the same covered in his Baccalaureate address: "What will you carry?" Read here.

Teresa Romano, Assistant Professor of Economics, was published with co-authors from Arizona State and Harvard in The Review of Economics and Statistics. Read more about the paper, titled "Does Evaluation Change Teacher Effort and Performance? Quasi-experimental Evidence from a Policy of Retesting Students," here.

Faculty and staff updates

Shawn Eastridge, Social Media Specialist, will be leaving Oxford for a new position on the Atlanta campus. Please join the Communications team in wishing him all the best in his new role. His last day will be May 26. Please reach out to Daniel Christian or Kristine Gonsalez for social media needs.

Effrosyni Seitaridou has been promoted to full Professor of Physics. The promotion was approved in a recent Emory University Board of Trustees meeting. Join us in congratulating her on this great news.

Staff Fest 2022

The return of Staff Fest was a huge success. There were a number of fun activities throughout the day—such as a rock wall, bicycles, and lawn games—as well as free commemorative tee shirts and food vendors across campus.

At the Staff Awards ceremony, Dean Hicks recognized several key contributors to life at Oxford. In a special moment, Coach Roderick Stubbs delivered Head Athletic Trainer Amanda Fischer her championship ring in recognition of her work with the cross country team, which won this year's national title. Then, Coach Stubbs awarded Dean Hicks a Varsity O to thank him for his time at Oxford.

Carlos Northern, Associate Director of Residential Education and Services, won the Fleming Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes outstanding service to the Oxford community.

The Friends of Oxford Award, which goes to Emory colleagues in Atlanta who have gone out of their way to assist Oxford, went to Katharine Foster, Director of COVID-19 Compliance and Operations, and Jeff Weaver, Director of IT Data Solutions.

Men's tennis team wins national title
