A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Thanks to all who shared their time and generosity at our annual Emory Cares event last weekend. More than 50 volunteers came together to pack 80 care boxes for children in Newton County Foster Care. At OSO’s Thanksgiving lunch tomorrow, they plan to pack an additional 20 boxes to make it an even 100.

As we continue to express the giving spirit throughout the holiday season, I encourage everyone to consider participating in the Oxford Holiday Assistance Program. This year, we’ll be providing new clothes, games, toys, and books to children in Newton County Foster Care. You can see the options for contributing here. The deadline is tomorrow.

As I reflect on my first semester, I am filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of my family and friends, and the privilege of being part of Oxford's community with its wonderful students, dedicated staff, and exceptional faculty. As the semester draws to a close, I encourage each of you to take a moment in the coming weeks to practice grace and gratitude, and reflect on what you have accomplished this term, what challenges you have overcome, and how much you have learned and grown.

Warmly,
Badia

NAME: Paige Crowl
TITLE/DEPT: Teaching and Learning Librarian—Oxford College Library
How long have you been at Oxford?
I've been at Oxford for four years. In my job, I support students, faculty, and staff with research and library resources. I also conduct individual research consultations and teach in-classroom library sessions on specialized topics. My topic area specialties are natural sciences and mathematics, social sciences, and digital projects.
What do you like best about your job and about Oxford?
My favorite thing about my job is when I can point someone to exactly the right resource to meet their information need—I love feeling like we solved the puzzle together. Librarianship is a really fun field because no two questions are ever the same, and you're always learning something new! Oxford is a small community, so I get to help people (students, faculty, and staff!) multiple times as they learn and grow over the course of their time here.
What is your favorite song/tv show/movie/restaurant/podcast?
In honor of the fall season, I have to mention Over the Garden Wall! Some of my favorite podcasts include You're Wrong About, Maintenance Phase, and BomBARDed.
What makes you happy or brings you joy?
I love watching my pet Kenyan sand boa, Oatie! I also enjoy listening to audiobooks while doing hand embroidery projects or jigsaw puzzles. Most weekends, I play board games or co-op video games with my wife—I have over 600 hours in Stardew Valley!
Please complete this sentence: It might surprise people to know that I...
...know over 10 ballroom dances, including foxtrot, waltz, tango, and salsa!

Emory Police Survey
Your Safety Matters
Our Emory Police Department is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive campus for everyone. Your collaboration and partnership are essential. Please take a moment to share feedback on campus safety in a confidential survey. Emory’s Office of Institutional Research & Decision Support administers the survey independently. All responses are confidential, and participation is voluntary.

Here are a few examples of how EPD has implemented survey feedback:
  • EPD has invited Emory students, faculty, and staff to participate in hiring and promotion assessments.
  • We launched a diverse Community Partnership advisory group to address key issues such as data and metrics, emergency response communications, and accreditation. The partnership includes Emory students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • EPD expanded departmental training to include Resilience, Duty to Intervene, Procedural Justice and Civil Rights.

Please share your voice. EPD also is offering a chance to win one of eight $50 Amazon gift cards as part of the survey campaign, which runs from Nov. 8 to Nov. 22. You can take the survey here.

Student Spirit of the Season Holiday Card Design Contest
Faculty and Staff — Please encourage your students to participate in this year's Holiday Card Design Contest! The invitation below went out to all Oxford students last week.

Dear Oxford Students,

We have many talented artists and photographers here on campus. If you have that artistic flair, we encourage you to enter our Spirit of the Season 2023 Holiday Card Design Contest. Each year, the Oxford Dean releases an official digital and print card as a season’s greeting to our friends in the Oxford community, and the winner will be featured on this year’s cover.

The contest is open to all Oxford students. Submissions may be an original photograph, drawing, painting, or digital artwork and must have an inclusive winter holiday theme. Also, we love to see ideas that use images of our beautiful campus.

Here are additional guidelines:

Any artwork that depicts copyrighted images will be rejected.
  • Size is 8.5” x 11” vertical or horizontal, color or black and white.
  • All entries must be digital and submitted in high resolution .jpg or .pdf formats to [email protected]. Non-electronic artwork must be digitized.
  • Submissions must be labeled with the student’s name, year, and contact information.
  • All entries must be received by Wednesday, November 29th at 5:00 p.m.
  • Entries that are not chosen for the card may still be featured on the Inside Oxford contest web page and on social media.
  • The winner will be chosen by the dean's office and will be awarded a $100 gift card and a copy of the final holiday card.
Emory Cares Day
Thank you to those who volunteered on Emory Cares Day to pack care boxes for children in Newton County Foster Care on Saturday, November 11.

Let's keep the Emory Cares spirit alive by creating more care boxes for Newton County Foster children during the OSO Thanksgiving lunch on Thursday, November 16. Last Saturday, volunteers packed 80 boxes, and with your help, we can aim for a total of 100.

Here's how you can help:
  • Spend extra time during the OSO Thanksgiving lunch to assemble, wrap, and make cards.
  • Bring in shoe boxes or small/medium boxes for packaging.
  • Contribute school supplies or toiletries items to fill the boxes. OSO has purchased some items that arrive this week.

Your support can make a real difference to the children in Newton County Foster Care. Please help in making this initiative a success!
