A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

As students, faculty, and staff prepare to leave campus to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, I continue to be thankful to be part of this extraordinary community.

Beginning this week and continuing through the end of the year, there will be many ways to celebrate the holiday spirit at Oxford. One great way is to support our talented students by attending one of their many performances over the next few weeks.

First up is the fall concert from the Chamber Orchestra Ensemble—this Friday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Williams Hall. The Ensemble will be playing music by Vivaldi, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. It will be a wonderful wrap-up to autumn. The concert is free and open to all.

Once we’ve all returned to campus, I hope you’ll stop by the Dean’s Annual Holiday Winter Wonderland Party at 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 3 on the Quad.

That same evening, the Oxford Dance Company is performing at 7:30 p.m. in Williams Hall. The show is free and open to all. Across campus on Dec. 2 and 3, Oxapella and members of the Chamber Orchestra will team up for the Oxford Chorale Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Tickets are available at the OxBox for $5 per person.

For many, these performances are the culmination of a semester’s worth of work. As we move toward winter break, their achievements are cause for celebration, as well as an opportunity to reflect on all we’ve each accomplished over the first half of this school year.

Best,
Doug
Oxford in the news
Last week's newsletter mentioned that Gary Glass, Director of Counseling and Career Services, was quoted in the book Building Students' Resilience. This week, a condensed excerpt was released that included some of his comments on the changing landscape of careers in counseling. Read more here.

2021 Holiday Assistance Program
The annual Holiday Assistance Program is a wonderful tradition where Oxford College faculty and staff come together to purchase and provide toys, books, games, and clothing for local children in need during the holiday season.

This year we are providing a set of new clothes (a shirt, pants, socks, underwear, pullover/fleece, jacket, shoes, and pajamas), as well as toys, games, books, and educational games for 12 local children in the Newton County Foster Care Program.

If you would like to participate in this year's Holiday Assistance Program, please complete this brief form by the afternoon of Nov. 18. Once you've submitted the form, you'll receive a wish list so you can start shopping.

You can:
  • shop for items for one child's list
  • shop for one or a few items from a child's list
  • support financially and Oxford staff will shop for you!
Panel: Women in Environmental Fields
Tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Phi Gamma Hall, please join Oxford Climate Reality Project and STEMinists in a discussion centered around environmentalism and feminism with women in green fields.

The event will involve hearing the career backgrounds of the panelists with a Q&A session to follow. Panelists include environmental scientist and Emory professor Eri Saikawa; environmental lawyer Mindy Goldstein; ambassador to the Thirst Project Jaya Dayal; and U.S. Department of State Senior Energy Advisor and Oxford alumna Katy Clarke.

Faculty and Staff Holiday Cookbook
The deadline to contribute your recipes to the Faculty & Staff Holiday Cookbook is this Friday, Nov. 19. You are invited to share up to two of your favorite dishes as we celebrate everyone's cooking traditions and creativity. Appetizers, breads, soups, salads, entrées, desserts, and beverages are all welcome. Sales will benefit the Chaplaincy Fund.
