A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Please join me in welcoming our students back from Fall Break.

Earlier this week, Oxford students and Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL) staff traveled just down the road to Camp Twin Lakes—a local site that offers a variety of programs for Georgia children and young adults—for this year’s Alternative Fall Break. Together, participants rolled up their sleeves to maintain and improve many of the camp’s essential facilities. Thanks to the SIL team for planning the program and to all who showed Oxford’s care for our local community.

As we continue to think about the principle of Care this October, I call your attention to the aptly named Care Collective, a program sponsored by the Office of Religious and Spiritual life that allows faculty and staff to send anonymous care packages to students. To learn more, visit this link where you can send a gift; purchase an item from the Care Collective’s Amazon Wishlist; or donate to the Chaplaincy Emergency Fund, which pays for unsponsored care package requests. For options to support a faculty or staff member, contact Alex Miller-Knaack

Thanks again for all you do to make Oxford a caring community.

Best regards,
Ken

Oxford in the news
Devon Goss, Assistant Professor of Sociology, will teach a class at Oxford as part of Emory’s Arts and Social Justice (ASJ) Fellows Program, which pairs Atlanta-based artists with faculty members across the university. Goss will partner with choreographer Leo Briggs for her Introduction to Sociology course. Read more here.
Tameka Cage Conley, Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing, continues to attract coverage for her course on the life and career of Tyler Perry. Bamba Ndiaye, Assistant Professor of African Studies, co-authored an op-ed published in The Conversation about the recent legislative elections in Senegal and previewed the upcoming presidential election in the country. You can read the piece here.

He also wrote an article entitled "Francophone Social Movements and the Challenges of Cyber-Monitoring" published in the latest issue of African Social Research, which you can read here.
Staff updates
Last week, Interim Dean Ken Carter shared in a letter to the Oxford community that Gina Critchet, the Associate Dean for Finance and Strategic Analyst for Emory's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, has agreed to serve as Oxford’s interim Chief Business Officer and Senior Associate Dean of Finance, Operations, and Technology. She will step in for Danielle Miller, who will transition to the Emory Office of the President on November 1. Join us in welcoming Gina to Oxford.

As she joins the Oxford leadership team, Gina will provide general oversight of Oxford's finance and administration division with assistance from unit directors, as well as support Dean Carter on strategic initiatives. In addition to her Oxford duties, she will continue providing financial and strategic direction to the nursing school—a common practice for senior business officers within the university.

Dean Carter is working to assemble a committee to begin the search for a permanent Senior Associate Dean of Finance, Operations, and Technology.

Oxford Studies: Navigating Challenges as a Young Professional in Silicon Valley
On October 13 at 6:30 p.m. in Humanities Room 202, Oxford Studies will host a talk titled "Navigating Challenges as a Young Professional in Silicon Valley" by Julian Johnson, Lead Strategic Business Planning & Operations Analyst at WhatsApp.

Julian graduated from Gonzaga University in 2010 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Since that time, he has worked for several technology companies in Silicon Valley, including Tesla, Twilio, and Meta (Facebook), as well as PG&E. Through these experiences, Julian has learned the value of applying a liberal arts education in a work environment focused on the future. He currently works in data analytics at Meta while pursuing a master’s degree through Georgia Tech’s online Business Analytics program. In his talk, he will provide insights about managing dynamic work environments while working with data and the challenges of being a young person in companies focused on rapidly developing the future of work and play.

Encourage your students to attend this Oxford Studies event.
2022 Chaplaincy Fundraiser
This year's Chaplaincy Fundraiser, hosted by the Oxford Staff Organization, will be held Wednesday, October 19 at Phi Gamma Hall from 12:00–2:00 p.m. Bon Appetit is generously sponsoring the event and will provide white and sweet potatoes with toppings, as well as vegan chili. Look for updates in EaglePost this week for accepted donation options.

The Chaplaincy Fund is a discretionary emergency fund that allows the Oxford College chaplain to help faculty, staff, and students who request financial assistance in times of crisis. The fund has been used to help students who have a family emergency and need help getting home, and for faculty and staff who face a hardship. Suggested donation is $5, but feel free to donate whatever you can.

Blessing of the Animals
Last week, the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life hosted the annual Blessing of the Animals outside the Oxford Student Center. Faculty and staff brought their pets—mostly dogs (and one cat!)—to campus to greet students as they stopped by for a study break and to make some new furry friends. The pets received their blessing from Oxford Chaplain Lyn Pace, who gave thanks for the companionship of animals and the joy they bring to our lives. Enjoy these pictures from the event!
