Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
With Homecoming and Family Weekend on the horizon, October promises to be another busy month. We’re also celebrating both LGBT History and Hispanic Heritage Month, so be on the lookout for campus events throughout the next few weeks.
There are two events I hope you’ll consider attending later this evening, Wednesday, October 4.
As part of National Diversity Week, the Library is hosting a conversation and reception tonight in honor of its new exhibit, “Creative Justice: A Celebration of Emory’s Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program” from 6:00–7:00 p.m. in the Franz Elizer Exhibit Space. The panel will include both students and faculty sharing their perspectives on and experiences with the program.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, ODEI is hosting a panel called “More Than Representation: Oxford Edition” with Pablo Palomino and Maria Davis. The event will take place later today in Humanities Hall, Room 202 from 5:00–6:00 p.m.
Also, later this week on October 6, Human Resources is hosting their monthly First Friday gathering from 12:00–2:00 p.m. They’ll serve wings, mac and cheese, salad, and desserts. Stop by and say hello to colleagues and friends!
And join Team Oxford at the Winship 5K this Saturday, October 7.
Warmly,
Badia

Last month’s Community Partner Meet & Greet offered students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to get to know many of our community partner organizations and discuss possible collaborations.
|
|
A message from Laura Gafnea, Director of Community Relations:
Hello everyone! I’m excited to highlight a few events we’ve hosted over the last month with our community partners as well as some upcoming local events in this month’s Community Corner.
Last month, Megan Hulgan and the SILT team coordinated a great Community Partner Meet & Greet event in the Dean’s Dining Room. Students, faculty, and staff were able to connect with several of our community partners to learn more about their work and see if they may be interested in volunteering with the organizations through Volunteer Oxford, Community Engaged Learning, Emory Reads, or Oxford Service Leaders. This was a wonderful opportunity to bring our partners together to think with students, faculty, and staff about opportunities to collaborate.
On Friday, September 15, Megan Hulgan, Rob Bobowski and I were able to accompany three Oxford student leaders on a visit to Takeda Pharmaceuticals to learn more about careers in advanced manufacturing along with Asher Dozier from the Newton County Office of Economic Development and Jordan Troutman and Stephen Woodall from the Newton County School System. This is part of a student-led initiative to mentor local high school students about opportunities in higher education and the workforce.
On Monday, September 25, Dr. Sarah Higinbotham presented a talk on Renaissance recipes during our first Oxford College/City of Oxford Community Classroom of the semester. We had over 20 community members attend and Dr. Higinbotham prepared a delicious, authentic 17th century hot chocolate recipe for the group to sample. Up next, we have partnered with Sustainable Newton for a Community Classroom on October 30, and Rev. Dr. Lyn Pace will lead the Community Classroom for November 27.
If you’re local to Newton County, there are several great events happening over the next few weeks. The Arts Association will host the next Live at Legion/Pink-Out concert on Friday, October 13, featuring Prisca & Friends. This is a free concert beginning at 7:00 pm at Legion Field in Covington. On Saturday, October 14, check out the City of Covington’s Ag Day & Farmer’s Market on the Square in Covington.
The Arts Association is hosting a series of Live at Lunch concerts on the Square in Covington throughout the month of October. Grab lunch from a local restaurant and enjoy concerts each Thursday in October beginning at noon. You can read more about other upcoming Arts Association events by clicking here: https://www.newtoncountyarts.org/upcoming-shows.
On Saturday, October 21, Covington First United Methodist Church will host Change the World Day, a free community-wide event featuring a community service fair to share opportunities in Newton County, a fall festival, food and music. The Gifts of Grace offers food, health items, clothes, blankets, and resources. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more, please email me at [email protected].
On Friday, October 27 at 6:00 pm, join the City of Covington for Final Friday Flicks on the Square featuring Goosebumps 2 (filmed in Covington) and Hocus Pocus.
Of course, October features several opportunities for Trick or Treating. On Saturday, October 28, the City of Oxford, Allen Memorial Church, and Oxford College will host the second annual Community Fall Festival on the City Green next to the Oxford Post Office. If you are interested in donating candy or hosting a trunk for “trunk or treat,” please email Laura Gafnea at [email protected].
Then, on October 31, join the YMCA and City of Covington for Trick or Treat at Legion Field in Covington.
