Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,
I hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend and found some time to relax, do something fun, or see friends and family.
A reminder that you are each invited to the Staff and Faculty Welcome Back Lunch at the Dean’s Residence from 12:00–2:00 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, September 7. If you haven’t already done so, please RSVP at this link. It will be a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues, so I hope to see you there.
As many of you know, several businesses in Covington Square were impacted by a fire about a week-and-a-half ago. I'm happy to say that we were able to work with Bon Appetit to provide meals to some of the city workers earlier this week. For more information and to learn how you can help, please refer to this issue’s Community Corner below.
Warmly,
Badia

How long have you been at Oxford?
I’ve been at Oxford for a little over a year. As an RLC, I’m responsible for making sure everything goes smoothly within my Residence Hall. This includes things such as programs for students, maintenance requests, and overseeing the RAs.

What do you like best about your job and about Oxford?
I love interacting with students and helping them figure out solutions to the myriad problems that they may face. It’s similar to solving little puzzles.

A message from Laura Gafnea, Director of Community Relations:
Hello everyone! Read below for September’s “Community Corner” a new feature in Campus Update highlighting upcoming community events over the next few weeks, along with some of the great things Oxford College faculty, staff, and students are doing out in the community.
Yesterday, I was able to deliver Bon Appetit boxed lunches to the City of Covington crew helping with clean-up efforts following the fires that destroyed several businesses in downtown Covington last week. Many thanks to Bon Appetit for providing these meals to the workers! If you are interested in contributing to the small businesses impacted by the fires, the Newton County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Covington have set up a small business resiliency fund which can be found here.
Last week, I partnered with Daniel Parson’s team at the Oxford College Farm to host nearly 50 members of the Newton County Young Farmer’s program. The participants toured the farm, learned about organic farming practices, and ate dinner in the Dining Hall following their tour. We were excited to host these members of our local community and tell them a little bit more about the Farm.
If you’re local to Newton County, there are several great events happening over the next few weeks. Throughout the summer and fall, our community hosts two farmer’s markets featuring local vendors:
- Oxford Farmer’s Market: Thursdays, 3 p.m.—6 p.m. on the city green next to the Oxford post office
- Covington Farmer’s Market: Saturdays, 9 a.m.—12 p.m., Covington Welcome Center (1143 Oak St. S.E. Covington, GA 30014)
The Arts Association will host their Live at Legion/Fuzz Run kickoff concert on Friday, September 8, featuring Purple Xperience, a Prince tribute. This is a free concert beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Legion Field in Covington.
The Covington Police Who Care Foundation will hold their Annual Fuzz Run 5K on Saturday, September 9. Anyone affiliated with Oxford College can get a discount at registration—just enter the code OXFR40. You can access the registration page here.
On Thursday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m., Sol Divino will perform at Old Church in Oxford. Sol Divino takes a slice from the late Renaissance and pairs this with the early Baroque masterworks of Castello, Frescobaldi, and Monteverdi in a concert that celebrates the instruments, the composers, and the music. $20 suggested donation; $10 for students and senior citizens. More information is available here.
On Monday, September 25, Oxford College and the City of Oxford will host our next “Community Classroom” at 6:00 p.m. at Oxford City Hall. Come learn about Renaissance recipes with Dr. Sarah Higinbotham and sample hot chocolate as it tasted in Shakespeare’s day!
Then, on Friday, September 29 at 6:00 p.m., join the City of Covington for Final Friday Flicks on the Square featuring a sing-along to Frozen and Mamma Mia!
Check out the City of Covington calendar here for more upcoming events. Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions!
