A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

I look forward to hosting our annual Welcome Back Lunch for faculty and staff tomorrow, Thursday, September 8, from 12:00–2:00 p.m. at the Dean's Residence. It's a great opportunity to catch up and reconnect with friends and colleagues while we are still early in the semester. Shuttles will run from the Student Center to the Dean's Residence starting at noon.

I also hope you have been finding other ways to re-ignite our community! If you are looking for inspiration, I encourage you to watch this thoughtful video by some of our Peer Advising Network leaders about the Oxford Principle of Belonging. I have been keeping up with my personal challenge of joining the community in the dining hall once a week.

Next week, we will have several community meetings to provide an update on the Twin Memorials project. We will explore engagement findings and narrative development, workshop ideas and sketches, and next steps. I encourage each of you to attend and share your thoughts at one of these meetings. You can RSVP here

  • Monday, September 12, 1:30–3:30 p.m. in the Mural Room, Oxford Student Center
  • Monday, September 12, 5:30–7:30 p.m. in the Mural Room, Oxford Student Center
  • Tuesday, September 13, 1:30–3:30 p.m. in the Mural Room, Oxford Student Center
  • Tuesday, September 13, 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church

Best Regards,
Ken

Oxford in the news
Ken Carter, Interim Dean and Charles Howard Candler Professor of Psychology, was a guest on NPR's podcast The Pulse to discuss the minds of thrill-seekers. Listen to the episode here.
Sarah Fankhauser, Associate Professor of Biology, was interviewed on The Science Pawdcast about her journey in biology and her mentorship of students. Listen to the podcast here.
David Gowler, Pierce Chair of Religion, was a Visiting Research Professor at McGill University in Montreal in August as he worked on a current book project, What Do Parables Want? Also of note, his book The Parables after Jesus: Their Imaginative Receptions across Two Millennia, originally published in 2017, was recently translated in the Indonesian language.
Lyn Pace, Oxford Chaplain, will be a featured guest in a conversation at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta following a showing of the play Everybody on September 22 at 7:30 p.m. Titled "A Comedian and a Philosopher Walk into a Bar: Seriously funny conversations about life, death, and everything in between," the talk is one of many in a series pairing a comedian with a "guest philosopher" to discuss the themes of the play—part of a partnership between the Alliance Theatre and Emory's Center for Ethics. Hosted by stand-up comedian Lace Larrabee, the conversation also will include Rabbi Dr. Brad Levenberg of Sandy Springs. To learn more about Lyn's event and to buy tickets (use the code CPEB25 for 25 percent off!), click here. To see more post-show conversations, click here.
Alumni news
Keri Hilson 03Ox 05C was an answer in one of The New York Times's crossword puzzles last week. The 45-across clue was “Hilson with the 2010 hit ‘Pretty Girl Rock'"—in reference to her 2010 song—and the answer was "Keri."

Sigmund Mosley 66Ox 68B was interviewed by VoyageATL about his successful career in investing. Read more here.

Sally Tyler 82Ox 84C will have her book The Durian Chronicles: Reflections on the US and Southeast Asia in the Trump Era published in October 2022. Tyler uses the fruit's dual nature as a metaphor for exploring the dissonance inherent in recent policy and political trends in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. Read more or pre-order the book from publisher Chin Music Press here.

This concert will feature music by Robert Schumann, Maurice Ravel, and New York composer John David Earnest. Chinese Mid-autumn Festival
The Chinese Mid-autumn Festival (AKA Moon Festival) takes place this coming weekend. Oxford Chinese classes, OCSA, and KASA will offer a Mid-autumn Festival Ceremony at the OSC Plaza on Saturday, September 10 from 5:00–7:00 p.m.

What you can do at the Mid-autumn Festival Ceremony:

  1. Make and taste the traditional dessert for the festival—mooncake.
  2. Make an origami moon and rabbit.
  3. Ice a moon- or rabbit-shaped cookie.
  4. Try on traditional clothes and take pictures to save this cultural moment.
  5. Enjoy traditional Chinese music performed by our Chinese Traditional Instrument Club.

With origins from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the Mid-autumn Festival began as a harvest festival. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Lunar calendar. It is a time for family members and loved ones to congregate and enjoy the full moon—an auspicious symbol of abundance, harmony, and luck. Today, it is one of the four most important traditional festivals in China and celebrated widely in Asia and among Asian populations all around the world.

Come experience the culture and enjoy the moon, the friendship, and the harmony.

They received an email last month, and tickets will be distributed in Discovery Seminars in September. Read more about Rapinoe here, and learn more about the 2022 Carter Town Hall here.
