A note from the Dean
Dear Faculty and Staff Colleagues,

Once again, Oxford College will be sponsoring a team for the Winship 5K. This year the race/walk occurs on October 2 with in-person and virtual options for participation. You can join Team Oxford or donate to the cause here. We also have t-shirts with the team logo available to support the team. Order here. For questions about the Winship race please reach out to Ken Anderson via email.

I hope you will consider participating and supporting this important event for Oxford, Emory, and Winship! We will continue to share more information about the team and race plans.

Best,
Doug
Faculty publications and recognition
Natalia Juliana Bayona Vásquez, assistant professor of Biology, co-authored the paper "Unveiling the Gut Microbiota and Resistome of Wild Cotton Mice, Peromyscus gossypinus, from Heavy Metal- and Radionuclide-Contaminated Sites in the Southeastern United States" recently published in the American Society for Microbiology journal Microbiology Spectrum. The work examines how areas affected by legacies of heavy metal and radionuclide contamination at the Savannah River Site impacted the gut microbiota community composition and diversity of the wild cotton mice. Researchers detected that contaminated sites have higher proportions of co-occurring genes associated with antibiotic resistance and metal resistance. The open-access paper is available using this link.
David Gowler, Dr. Lovick Pierce and Bishop George F. Pierce Professor of Religion, director of the Pierce Program in Religion, and senior faculty fellow with the Center for Ethics at Emory University, is the author of the chapter, “The Belated Return of the ‘Son’: Thomas Hart Benton’s Prodigal Son." The chapter is on a unique visual interpretation of the Prodigal Son parable and is found in The Art of Biblical Interpretation: Visual Portrayals of Scriptural Narratives published by the Society of Biblical Literature Press.
Sarah Higinbotham, assistant professor of English, was recognized by Atlanta United MLS and American Family Insurance during a recent Atlanta United soccer game. Higinbotham is the co-founder of the nonprofit organization Common Good Atlanta and the organization was selected and honored as one of five “Atlanta Uniters” -- organizations that are driving social impact in communities and helping to build unity throughout Atlanta. In recognition of their efforts, Common Good Atlanta was given $30,000 for college programing in prisons. American Family Insurance produced this four-minute video, filmed on the Oxford campus, about Common Good Atlanta. The company's sponsorship of the 2021 Unity Kit for Atlanta United included $105,000 to the five Atlanta Uniter organizations.
Erin Tarver, associate professor of philosophy, was featured by the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy (SAAP) for their series, "I am an American Philosopher.” Read the published interview with Tarver on the SAAP website.
Congratulations
Lauren Braun, assistant dean for Academic Affairs and director of the Advising Support Center, and her husband Gavin Boonstra welcomed a baby boy, Barrett Charles, on August 27. Barrett weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz. and was also welcomed lovingly by canine family members Duke and Cooper.
Southern Circuit Film Series
Oxford College is a host of the Southern Circuit Film Series again this year. The 2021-22 season kicks off with an exclusive virtual screening of the 2020 documentary film, Stateless from August 12-15.

The documentary film shines a light on the crisis in the Dominican Republic, where those of Haitian descent have been stripped of citizenship and the grassroots campaign of electoral hopeful Rosa Iris.
A conversation with Director/Producer Michèle Stephenson, who will discuss the film and the filmmaking process, follows the online screening.

Despite sharing an island and similar histories, Haiti and the Dominican Republic have long-standing racial and political tensions that divide them. In 2013, the Dominican Republic’s Supreme Court revoked the citizenship of anyone with Haitian parents, retroactive to 1929, rendering more than 200,000 people stateless, without nationality, identity, or a homeland. Stateless follows Rosa Iris Diendomi, a community organizer and attorney whose father was a Haitian migrant, as she mounts a campaign challenging electoral corruption and advocating for social justice.

“As a hyphenated Black Latina,” says Stephenson, “I felt compelled to express how deeply embedded the racial caste system is in our Latinx communities and how identity and citizenship are so closely connected to anti-Blackness—and yet its discussion either escapes or is superficially misconstrued by mainstream media.”

Michèle Stephenson is a filmmaker, artist, author, and co-founding member of the Rada Film Group. Her work has appeared on PBS, Showtime, and MTV. Her most recent film, American Promise, was nominated for three Emmys, including Best Documentary and Outstanding Coverage of a Current News Story. The film also won the Jury Prize at Sundance and was selected for the New York Film Festival Main Slate Program. She is also a 2016 Guggenheim Fellow. Stephenson’s recent book, Promises Kept, written with co-authors Joe Brewster and Hilary Beard, won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work.

This event is made possible through the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, a South Arts program. Since its inception in 1975, Southern Circuit has introduced some of the country's best
independent filmmakers and their films to communities throughout the South. The program is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information, please visit the documentary website.

Eagles support Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month with Alumni Tennis Tournament
The Oxford tennis teams hosted the inaugural Alumni Tournament on September 4 in honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Head Tennis Coach Pernilla Hardin. The tournament was a doubles-only format with eight men's teams and four women's teams consisting of alumni competing alongside current student players. Cody Lu and Ally Render were champions in the women’s division, and Tate Coston and Andrew Sun in the men’s division. The Oxford athletic department and Coach Hardin would like to thank all who participated and supported Ovarian Cancer Awareness and those who supported the cause with their donations. All of the proceeds go to Ovarian Cancer research. Read more about the tournament online here.
Team Oxford supports the Winship Win the Race 5K Run/Walk.
Oxford College will participate as a team in the
Winship Win the Fight 5K Run/Walk. This annual family-friendly event supports the ground- breaking research and outstanding patient care at Winship Cancer Institute. This year’s team moniker is “Team Oxford” to celebrate our wonderful campus community! The 11th annual Winship Win the Fight 5K Run/Walk will be a hybrid event with the virtual race happening September 26-October 1 and a safe, in-person race on October 2. Oxford team participants can run or walk either virtually or at the in-person event held on the Atlanta campus.

Let’s continue the generosity shown in the past as we support Emory’s Winship Cancer Center. We have set a goal to raise $2,500 and have 30 team members. You can help reach this goal by registering to run/walk, or by donating via the team page.

T-shirts are available for participants or team supporters to purchase. The performance tees (no cotton) are $15 each. Proceeds will go toward our team fundraising goal.

The deadline for shirt orders is September 9. Please complete the form linked here (complete one form per shirt). Bring cash or check payments for your shirt on or before October 1 to Seney Hall 408. We expect them to be available on September 27.
