"Campus Update" is a weekly e-newsletter published by LaGuardia's Division of Communications and External Affairs to provide news and information to the college community. | | The Division of Communications and External Affairs offers various additional resources to help you share news with the campus, including an event calendar, photography, graphic design, and more. | | Staff and faculty from the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, including new director, Jennifer Jensen, representatives of NYCHA and the Public Housing Community Fund (PHCF), exhibition curators, and LaGuardia photography students and faculty gathered on campus yesterday to celebrate the opening of Living in the Shade: NYCHA Open Space Past, Present, and Future. This exhibition highlights the vital role of open space in the daily lives of public housing residents. Hosting the exhibition on campus is particularly fitting as our namesake, former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, founded NYCHA in 1935. Today, roughly one in 15 New Yorkers lives within public housing, according to exhibit co-curator Matthias Altwicker (NYIT). As Alex Zablocki, executive director of PHCF said, “Public housing is part of the fabric of New York City.” The exhibition, located in the lobby of Shenker Hall (the M-Building), is on display through May 23. | | President Adams and Council Member Julie Won (26th District) co-hosted a breakfast on Friday, March 21, to honor women from the Queens community for their dedication to improving financial futures, education, housing, and traffic safety for children and families. Carmen Griffin, Technical Director and Operations Manager for the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) and Professor Nicole Maguire, Director of LaGuardia’s Business Administration Program received proclamations for their service. Council Member Won recognized three community leaders with proclamations and honored five volunteers. The “Celebrating the Women of Queens” event is held annually during Women’s History Month. Assemblymember Claire Valdez (District 37) attended the event and thanked LaGuardia for hosting the event with Council Member Won. | | LaGuardia will host an interdisciplinary conference, “100 Years of Quantum Physics,” next Wednesday, April 2, from 2:15 to 6 p.m. in Room E-242.
