FYS Textbook Available to Help Students Succeed at LaGuardia
The LaGuardia First Year Seminar Textbook was created by a team of faculty, staff, and students to support the overall success of LaGuardia students. While developed with new-to-college students in mind, this free, online textbook offers content of interest to all students. Topics include: campus navigation, finding your community, academic success skills, health and wellbeing, and major exploration. Students played a key role in content creation, resulting in content that is accessible and responsive to LaGuardia’s diverse student population.

LaGuardia is offering a new major this fall. Business Administration: Facilities Management is designed for students interested in business operations and maintaining a business’s physical space. New courses were developed in collaboration with the International Facility Management Association Foundation, and include BTM113 Introduction to Facilities Management, BTM206 Building Systems: Anatomy of a Building, and BTM208 Project Management. A new academic department, Community Health and Wellness, has also been introduced to house non-clinical healthcare related majors. These majors, which include Human Services: Mental Health and Public and Community Health, were previously part of Health Sciences. The addition of the new department is intended to clarify advisement and career pathways for students, and enhance faculty, scholarship, research and development, says Dr. Dionne Miller, associate dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. Nicolle Fernandes, professor of nutrition and culinary management, will chair the new Community Health and Wellness Department.
Students looking for enrollment services support can now access virtual office hours every Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Virtual One Stop takes place on Zoom and allows students to drop in and meet with staff from the Admissions, International Student Services, Registrar, Student Financial Services, Student Information Center, Transfer Credit Evaluation and Testing offices.

The LaGuardia Red Hawks are gearing up for the 2024-25 Athletics season with the start of Men’s Soccer, the return of Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Cross Country, and the debut of Women’s Volleyball. LaGuardia Athletics Director Andrew Walker says the 2024-2025 “looks very promising.” “With the addition of Women’s Volleyball we’ve expanded LaGuardia Athletics by over 150% adding three new sports in three years,” Walker said. “In past years LaGuardia had only Men’s and Women’s Basketball. Now we have Men’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, and Men’s and Women’s Cross Country.” The 2023-24 academic year brought the return of the Athletics programming at LaGuardia Community College. This season coaches hope to capitalize on their successes and learn from the challenges they faced last year. Walker says each coach is prepared to work with student athletes to ensure their academic eligibility and capture more wins for each team.

Security Alert: Guard Against Increasing Phishing Email Attacks
There has been an increase in phishing attacks directed at CUNY from a variety of Gmail accounts. Most are of the familiar job scam variety which students are prone to acting on. CUNY/CIS teams are working with Microsoft to block these attacks, which are not “spammy” or “phishy” in nature so they aren’t automatically blocked by email security measures. CUNY/CIS urges all to guard against responding to potential phishing emails, as well as to communicate with colleagues and students to generate greater awareness about the scam increase.
Recommended User Actions Include:
- DO NOT reply to unexpected or unusual emails.
- DO NOT reply to emails with personal information or passwords.
- DO NOT click links or open attachments in unsolicited emails.
- DO read the CUNY Ransomware and Phishing Advisories.
- DO complete security awareness training at security.cuny.edu.
If you suspect you’ve received a suspicious or phishing email, please forward it to spam@lagcc.cuny.edu. Do not forward it to the LAG Information Technology Division or other group distribution lists or employees, including IT personnel. If you already responded to a phishing email, immediately contact our IT HelpDesk by submitting a ticket through the Faculty & Staff Portal or by email at ITHelp@lagcc.cuny.edu, or call 718-482-6134. If you have questions, please contact LaGuardia's Information Security team.
