"Campus Update" is a weekly e-newsletter published by LaGuardia's Division of Communications and External Affairs to provide news and information to the college community. | | The Division of Communications and External Affairs offers various additional resources to help you share news with the campus, including an event calendar, photography, graphic design, and more. | | The New York City Department of Transportation cut the ribbon on a new pedestrian plaza at LaGuardia on Monday, bringing 17,390 square feet of new pedestrian space to Long Island City. In partnership with the college, the LaGuardia Community Greenway, located on 29th Street between Skillman Avenue and 47th Avenue, has transformed an underutilized street into a vibrant, social, public space for students and community members to enjoy. The ribbon cutting for the Greenway featured a musical performance by HONK Family Band and a dance performance by Ayazamana Ecuadorian Dance Group, part of the Ecuadorian American Cultural Center in Long Island City, presented in partnership with Queensboro Dance Festival. After three years of Open Streets, student events, programming events, activities, and community outreach, NYC DOT and LaGuardia have transformed the street into western Queen’s newest pedestrian plaza, featuring a block-long mural designed by Fernanda Contreras, a Fine Arts student at the college. The asphalt mural, one of the largest currently on display in New York City, was painted through a collaborative effort from NYC DOT and LaGuardia through NYC DOT Art Partners with the help of volunteer members of the student body and faculty. At the ceremony, NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez also announced that the city’s annual Halloween celebration, Trick-or-Streets, will return for a fourth year on Open Streets, pedestrian plazas, and other corridors throughout the city this October, with a record high 137 car-free events and counting planned through the month. | | Campus Life Hosts Fall Club Fest to Encourage Students to get Involved on Campus | On Wednesday afternoon, Campus Life hosted Fall Club Fest, an annual club fair for LaGuardia students to learn more about the more than 50 different organizations that they can get involved with on campus. Students who attended the festival got to meet with representatives from several different clubs on campus, as well as enjoy free food and music from a live DJ. Students who missed the event can learn more about the different clubs and organizations at LaGuardia by visiting Campus Life's webpage or by contacting campuslife@lagcc.cuny.edu. | | Runners, walkers, and neighbors are invited to join the Fourth Annual LaGuardia Community Run, a 5K race on Sunday, October 19, 2025. The USATF-certified course goes from LaGuardia to the LIC Waterfront and back. The start and finish will be on the LaGuardia Community Greenway, 29th Street between Skillman and 47th Avenues—now home to New York City’s largest street mural, designed by LaGuardia Fine Arts student Fernanda Contreras. Race proceeds will support Finca La Florecita, LaGuardia’s urban farm, which provides fresh produce to the LaGuardia CARES food pantry, and cultivates the next generation of Urban STEM agricultural leaders. Each participant will receive a free T-shirt and an electronic certificate featuring their photo and finish time. An Activities Plaza will feature music, raffles, and tables hosted by local businesses, sponsors, and college departments. Additionally, all participants can bring their race bib to Tacombi—LIC, a Mexican restaurant located nearby at 27-10 43rd Avenue, for a 15% meal discount. The top male, female, and non-binary finishers will each receive a medal and a $100 gift certificate to Tacombi-LIC. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students and children (ages 7 and up are welcome, as are all fitness levels). Participation is more than double compared to this time last year, so early registration is encouraged in case the race reaches capacity. | | As a proud Hispanic-serving institution—where 46% of students identify as Hispanic—LaGuardia is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a wide variety of programming led by Casa de las Américas. After a month's worth of fun cultural activites, La Casa will close out the month with a community-wide Hispanic Heritage Celebration on the LaGuardia Community Greenway from 1 to 4 p.m. on October 15. The celebration will feature music, games, food, and information about campus and local resources. | | On Friday, October 3, President Kenneth Adams presented his annual Fall Report. The article features the outcomes of A&P Bootcamp, developed by Dr. Jenkins in 2017 when he sought to improve student outcomes in SCB203: Human Anatomy and Physiology I, a course that has historically (and still) faced a high (>50%) DFW rate. Such high rates may indicate issues with the course's rigor, design, teaching methods, or student support. Moreover, elevated DFW rates in gateway courses are particularly problematic because they can disproportionately affect minority, first-generation, and/or low-income students, hampering their academic progress and increasing the risk of leaving college. To address this, Dr. Jenkins developed the A&P Boot Camp, a pre-semester workshop that aims to equip students with the essential skills, strategies, and knowledge necessary to succeed in SCB203. The Boot Camp has gained increasing popularity and success to the point that its model has been adopted by others in our department and at different institutions. Such student-centered initiatives are valuable because they foster a supportive environment that can markedly improve student success. | | | Jason Hendrickson Appointed to University Advisory Committee on Diversity | | | | English Professor Jason Hendrickson has been appointed to serve on the University Advisory Council on Diversity. | | LaGuardia CC Red Hawks 1 - 1 Queensborough CC Tigers | |
Shouts and cheers pierced the autumnal calm of the Queensborough Community College campus during a heated battle between LaGuardia Red Hawks and Queensborough Tigers on Thursday, October 2. LaGuardia midfielder Mattia Mengozzi made his debut appearance
midway through the first half, but he was injured just seven minutes after coming onto the pitch. Red Hawks players Alpha Koroma and Abdoul Ouedraogo both earned two yellow cards in the first half from aggressive tackles on opponents. The Tigers took an early lead off a glancing header from a corner kick. The Red Hawks fought back, tallying seven shots in the first half, including two breakaway chances. Despite their efforts to score, LaGuardia went into the halftime break trailing 0-1. Tensions escalated in the second half of the Queens Junior College Derby. Youssef Elsayed created another scoring chance later in the second half when he broke into the penalty area and was hauled down by a Queensborough defender. LaGuardia midfielder Brayan Ospina buried the resulting penalty shot to tie the game. The match concluded with the final 1 - 1 score.
LaGuardia CC Red Hawks 1 - 7 SUNY Ulster Senators
On Saturday, October 4, LaGuardia Men’s Soccer traveled upstate to Ulster County on a warm
Fall day along with all the seasonal apple-pickers. After a long drive, the Red Hawks started the
game with stiff legs and were quickly overwhelmed by the Senators. Ulster County scored in the
opening minutes of the game, and four more goals followed before the first half came to a close.
During the break, LaGuardia regrouped and started the second half more confident and
sure-footed. SUNY Ulster struck first in the second half. Shortly after, the Red Hawks retaliated
with a goal of their own. The play began with a pass from center back Modou Lamin Jaiteh to
right back Jonathan Nahuacatl, who then fed the ball into midfielder Mikael Canonge. LaGuardia
forward Youssef Elsayed made a canny move into midfield to receive the next pass, then he
played the ball to the feet of onrushing left back Abdoul Ouedraogo. In a flash, left winger Edwin
Sherpa was behind the Ulster defense and running onto a delicious through ball sent by
Ouedraogo. With characteristic coolness, Sherpa tucked the ball in the back of the net. The Red
Hawks bench erupted in appreciation of the truly beautiful passage of play that led to the goal -
it was a moment of inspiration in an otherwise very difficult, defensive match. The Senators
scorched LaGuardia with 12 corner kicks, 21 total shots - 16 shots on goal - and 7 goals.
LaGuardia CC Red Hawks 0 - 7 Nassau CC Lions
What promised to be a competitive match quickly spiraled into a blowout, with the Lions tallying
six goals from twelve shots before the halftime whistle. The first goal came early, and from the
head of LaGuardia left back Abdoul Ouedraogo. One of the Nassau center backs launched a
hopeful lob into the box. Red Hawks goalkeeper Christopher Nunez Gil charged out to deal with
the ball, but Ouedraogo got there first. It was miscommunication and an errant touch, and just
like that, Nassau took the lead in the first five minutes of the game. From then on, the Lions
dominated possession, pinning the Red Hawks in their own defensive end. LaGuardia mounted
several counter-attacks that broke through on goal, yet all of those attacks petered out without
troubling the Nassau goalkeeper. The goals began to flow in earnest midway through the first
half. The Red Hawks failed to mark the Nassau midfielders, and the Lions pounced on the
opportunity and attacked the LaGuardia defense relentlessly. Once again, LaGuardia rallied
after the halftime break, and delivered a much tougher defensive performance in the second
half, holding Nassau to just one goal from 10 shots.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month and the them of this week is “Stay Safe Online,” providing reminders that protecting your data doesn’t have to be complicated. Strong passwords should be long, unique to each account, and difficult to guess.
Helpful Password Tips:
- Make passwords long: at least 13 characters
- Use random strings or phrases, and mix letters, numbers, and symbols.
- Create unique passwords for every account.
- One approach is to use the initial letters of a phrase to generate a memorable, yet strong password. For example, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” yields “tfbttwbitbotd.” Upper case letters, numbers and special characters can be substituted or added to make it sufficiently complex.
Our emails and supporting information are available from the National Cyber Security Awareness Month page on the CUNY web site. For more information and helpful password resources and tips, refer to your IT Update email dated October 6. If you have any questions, please contact LaGuardia’s Information Security Manager Maritza Acero at informationsecurity@lagcc.cuny.edu.
