Three Siblings Embrace Their Bengali Culture as LaGuardia Community College Students

With LaGuardia Community College/CUNY students coming from all over the world, they bring their global perspectives and cultural influences, which become sources of inspiration for pursuing a college degree and planning a career. Three siblings from Bangladesh, MD Siddique, 24, Amena Shamia, 21, and Nadia Begum, 20, have brought their traditions and values to New York City and LaGuardia. With the degrees they’re pursuing, the three first-generation college students plan to serve their New York City Bengali community by sharing their knowledge of medicine, mental health, and technology. MD, a Computer Science major, aspires to become an artificial intelligence (AI) researcher, working to build technology that medicine can use to find cures and help solve other big problems. Nadia, a Psychology major, wants to become a therapist or social worker. She intends to educate the Bengali community about mental health, encourage them to talk about it and understand the benefits of seeking treatment. Amena, a Biology major, hopes to become a role model for young people in her community as a physician who is proudly Muslim and wears a hijab.
